GOP Lawmakers Treat President Obama’s Joint Address To Congress Like A Town Hall Protest

By Think Progress on Sep 9th, 2009 at 9:34 pm

Tonight during his joint address to Congress, President Obama attempted to set the record straight on some of the “key controversies” surrounding the health care debate. While it’s normal for members of the opposition party to occasionally not clap at statements with which they disagree, congressional Republicans went further tonight, being outright rude at times.

At one point, President Obama addressed the myth that his health care proposals would insure undocumented immigrants: “This, too, is false – the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally.”

In response, Republicans not only began booing him, but Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) shouted out, “LIE!” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) shot an angry look in his direction, and Vice President Biden shook his head. The rudeness shocked even veteran political observers such as NBC’s Chuck Todd, who wrote on Twitter, “Wow. What’s next a duel?” MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough also wrote, “Whoever shouted out that the president was lying is a dumbass who should show the President respect.” On MSNBC after the speech, Newsweek reporter Howard Fineman said, “The Republicans were mostly stage props in this speech tonight and they behaved like it.”

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) could also be seen holding a homemade sign — similar to the ones seen at town hall protests which read, “What bill?”

CNN: GOP congressman heckles Obama during health-care speech

"It was crude and disrespectful," said Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, a top Senate Democrat. "I think the person who said it will pay a price."

The Republican Response, Arriving a Little Early

By Dana Milbank
Thursday, September 10, 2009

When he asserted that "nothing in this plan will require you or your employer to change the coverage or the doctor you have," there was scoffing and outright laughter on the GOP side. Rep. Jeb Hensarling (Tex.) shook his head in disbelief. Several Republicans shouted "What plan?" and Rep. Louis Gohmert (Tex.) waved at Obama a handwritten poster he made on a letter-size piece of paper: "WHAT PLAN?" Gohmert then took that down and replaced it with another handmade poster that said "WHAT BILL?"

The irony was that Obama had used his speech to offer a significant concession to Republicans and to break with liberals in his own party. There was a cool silence in the chamber as the president told "my progressive friends" that the "public option" they treasure as part of health-care reform could be sacrificed in favor of other ideas.

=snip=

But while the majority of both parties' lawmakers behaved as adults, the insolence by House Republicans stole the show. There was derisive laughter on that side of the chamber when Obama noted that "there remain some significant details to be ironed out." They applauded as he spoke of "all the misinformation that's been spread over the past few months." They laughed again when he said that "many Americans have grown nervous about reform."

When Obama addressed the charge that he plans "panels of bureaucrats with the power to kill off senior citizens," someone on the GOP side shouted out "shame!" The president went on: "Such a charge would be laughable if it weren't so cynical." "Read the bill!" someone shouted back. Obama mentioned those who accuse him of a government takeover of health care. "It's true," someone shouted back.

The antics continued when Obama urged opponents to "come to me with a serious set of proposals." About 20 Republican members raised copies of the GOP health-reform proposal over their heads. They raised their props again when Obama criticized those who think "it's better politics to kill this plan than improve it."

1. I hope Dems leaders and ordinary Dems like us hit on this stuff hard . . .
as hard as the Repugs would if this had been done to W -- !!!

Meanwhile, looks to me like the GOP are living out their dream of "third world America" --

and/or having a nervous breakdown!

Imagine the pressure the "for profit" health care industry must be putting on them!!!

2. it certainly is a whole new world for them - they behave like mongrels with Obama in there, but if a
Dem did this to b*sh they'd want them removed from the Congress and put in a prison to be tortured by Dick and Rummy!

I cannot believe the insipid behavior of these teabaggers, oh wait, they're not teabaggers - these are supposedly congressmen! wow... how homewrecked is that GOP!!!! ha

mental breakdown over a black man in power - that's how it reads to me, they wouldn't be like this if Kerry/Gore/Edwards etc were president.

6. When the camera panned across that region of the room
Their faces were laughable. They were miserable, calculating, angry. It was odd for reasonable people in light of the things Obama was saying. They looked ridiculous.

Boy didn't Obama nail McCain with his own plan? That was funny.

3. wacky town hall behavior
Edited on Thu Sep-10-09 04:15 AM by Trav1u
Reminiscent of those Town hall meetings don’t you think? Now you know; if you didn’t already know, who was behind those wacky Town hall people disrupting those meetings. In recent times, have the Republicans ever treated a president with such disrespect when he is delivering a major speech like this before? If not, why now?

They can't get away with that very thinly vieled lie any more, after pulling the curtain like that.

8. Wake up, Obama
This is the clearest message yet from the GOP: We will not work with you. It's time to tell them that they have missed their chance for bipartisanship and that you'll proceed independently from them.

The biggest mistake was allowing tea-baggers to sit in seats that were supposed to be reserved for United States Congressmen.

More more I see him, the more he looks like an Alzheimers victim.

It's clear that he didn't hear the ruckus until Pelosi elbowed him.

10. Conservative true colors are showing
One more reason to just steamroller the Republicans in Congress and pass legislation without their support (or input.)

We hold the majority, we don't need the Republicans to govern

19. The Hemorrhoid Party
It reminds me of a time when my son and I went to watch the Giants play the Dodgers in San Francisco. The Giants hit a bases-loaded home run- a Grand Slam. The whole stadium erupted into five minutes of feverish pandemonium. The Dodgers were left standing out on the field; no choice but to stand there and take it.

It was great to see the Grand Slam, but seeing the opponents stand there dejected and alone, no choice but to take it- Priceless!
