I'm not sure if this video has been posted of late but I thought it was an appropriate time to watch it again considering the coming Obama speech this week. In this clip, JFK makes an argument for universal health care at Madison square garden, NY. He talks about universal healthcare in other countries and believes the US should start with seniors first (Medicare). Yet today, 47 years later, we still find ourselves battling republicans (especially those who are enjoying the perks of Medicare today) to implement decent universal health care coverage for all. It will be a test of real metal leadership to rise above current republican resistance and chatter and take up the fight for REAL health care reform which includes a robust public option at the very least of demands. Anything short of that is nothing more than saving one's own political ass.

6. Look who was against Medicare!

Criticism

At the time it was enacted, conservatives strongly opposed Medicare, warning that a government-run program would lead to socialism in America:

* Ronald Reagan: “f you don’t and I don’t do it, one of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in America when men were free.” <1961><54>

* George H.W. Bush: Described Medicare in 1964 as “socialized medicine.” <1964><55>

* Barry Goldwater: “Having given our pensioners their medical care in kind, why not food baskets, why not public housing accommodations, why not vacation resorts, why not a ration of cigarettes for those who smoke and of beer for those who drink.” <1964><56>

* Bob Dole: In 1996, while running for the presidency, Dole stated that he was one of 12 House members who voted against creating Medicare in 1965. “I was there, fighting the fight, voting against Medicare ... because we knew it wouldn’t work in 1965.” <1992><57>
