6. he nailed in on the issue of subsidizing another private entity.
Does the tax payer also subsidize research? Because that has always been the argument: can't make it non-profit, there would be no incentive to do research. I hear that all the time. But I think the government already funds so much of the research?

8. Yes. The govt funds most original reasearch for new drugs. But
the private sector funds the ones that involve changing a molecule or two of existing drugs to protect the patents that are about to expire. Those marketing driven drug changes are privately funded.

But the funding for the introduction of new drugs is government funded to a large extent.

But the Pay-or-Die privatized healthcare companies can say-- we spend X-million on R&D! -- and still be telling the truth, even if they're just trying to tinker with a popular drug so they can market it as brand new and save their profits before the old one goes generic.

19. Well check this out on what the WH has really been doing.
You think Bush would have let a sitting senator like Grassley lead him around by the nose all summer on such an important issue like Obama has allowed Baucus to do...drawing the HC reform bill out over recess so it could be torn apart with lies misleading the public so it just becomes one big distraction?

from Glenn Greenwald @salon.com:

The attempt to attract GOP support was the pretext which Democrats used to compromise continuously and water down the bill.  But -- given the impossibility of achieving that goal -- isn't it fairly obvious that a desire for GOP support wasn't really the reason the Democrats were constantly watering down their own bill?  Given the White House's central role in negotiating a secret deal with the pharmaceutical industry, its betrayal of Obama's clear promise to conduct negotiations out in the open (on C-SPAN no less), Rahm's protection of Blue Dogs and accompanying attacks on progressives, and the complete lack of any pressure exerted on allegedly obstructionists "centrists," it seems rather clear that the bill has been watered down, and the "public option" jettisoned, because that's the bill they want -- this was the plan all along.

The Obama White House isn't sitting impotently by while Democratic Senators shove a bad bill down its throat.  This is the bill because this is the bill which Democratic leaders are happy to have.  It's the bill they believe in.  As important, by giving the insurance and pharmaceutical industries most everything they want, it ensures that the GOP doesn't become the repository for the largesse of those industries (and, converesly, that the Democratic Party retains that status).
This is how things always work.  The industry interests which own and control our government always get their way.  When is the last time they didn't?  The "public option" was something that was designed to excite and placate progressives (who gave up from the start on a single-payer approach) -- and the vast, vast majority of progressives (all but the most loyal Obama supporters) who are invested in this issue have been emphatic about how central a public option is to their support for health care reform.  But it seems clear that the White House and key Democrats were always planning on negotiating it away in exchange for industry support.  Isn't that how it always works in Washington?  No matter how many Democrats are elected, no matter which party controls the levers of government, the same set of narrow monied interests and right-wing values dictate outcomes, even if it means running roughshod over the interests of ordinary citizens (securing lower costs and expanding coverage) and/or what large majorities want..."

Go read the rest of the article 'cause he will tell what is being done about it and how you can help. If only Ed Schultz would get the message of this article he'd know what direction to take in this debate.

Edited on Thu Aug-20-09 11:50 PM by GivePeaceAchance
verify. Anonymous amounts to as good as nobody saying it in official capacity. We can only guess a speculate but that's not always the wisest thing. So much gets made up these days, that when Washington post says anomynous... I'm like hmmm(talking of the anomynous quote at the start). They can say a lot behind closed doors but we can only debate what's said in an official capacity. But sure it leaves room for doubt, I'll just try and understand what's said on record.

18. and make Fox News tell the truth on HC along with the republicans.
Notice how no one is ever around to refute the republicans when they make such bogus claims about reform. Even Grassley tried to walk back his comments when truth tellers confronted him...the lying bastard.

"That's not what your wife said" Grassley is such a bottom dweller. Kucinich is wrong about going back to the people...How does that work when they have been filled with nothing but lies from republicans?

People have already said what they want. It's not the people who need to be interviewed, it's the conservadems and the republicans. Public interviews with a fact checker to make sure the truth is told and then ask them what "they" will support since the people alrready know and have told you.

25. I AM POOR, DISABLED AND HAVE BEEN FIGHTING FOR SS BENEFITS
Edited on Fri Aug-21-09 05:39 AM by dotymed
For three years. The best cardiologists in our state don't
think I have another 3 years in me. I supported Dennis for
President, even financially, which I never do because I can not
afford it, until the "powers that be" forced him to
return home and fight against a very well funded Congressional
opponent (I think the Dem's. helped to finance this opponent
also). Anyway, Dennis Kucinich has proven that he IS the man
to be OUR President. Dennis or Bernie Sanders(Senator from
Vermont) are the only two people that I would vote for in the
next election. If either of them do not run, I don't vote.
There comes a time in our political maturing when we have to
stop "compromising" (Bipartisan BULLSHIT) and vote
for the individual who will guide us to an America that has
only been imagined.I hope I do have three years left, just so
I get the honor of voting for one of these two American
heroes.

The only politicians I can think of that take the job of doing the people's business with a sense of logic and public duty.

HR676 can be put BACK on the table if we progressives push as hard as we did to get Obama elected.

Check out Mad As Hell Doctors.
A group of members from Physicians for a National Health Plan in Oregon will be driving a cross country Care A Van to DC to demand profit be removed from health care. They plan to post YouTube video through the entire journey and will stop in more than 20 cities along the way.
We can make this a VERY public thing.

The time is right, the message is clear. Universal health care, now.

May I suggest a different lawyer? There are lawyers that will take your case pro bono and will fight for you and see that you get the help you need.
Good luck :) and I hope to see you posting for many years to come.

26. "the left of the left"
If that is not a Reich Wing talking point there never was one. It sounds for all the world like Rumsfield speak. So, what conclusions do we reach from this? My conclusion is that a senior member of President Obama's staff is there strictly to steer him and prevent him from doing anything that would damage corporate interests. Whether they have "evidence" against President Obama or are threatening his family or what, I do not know. But President Obama's behavior has been very curious.

31. K & R ...Kucinich 2012 ...Why isn't Obama on national tv dispelling the repuke lies?
Here we have a great smooth talking president who has not gone on national tv to straighten out the bull shit lies about health care reform with a public option. He could attack the repukes for what they are saying on this subject. He could be calling out these morons who propagate the bull shit (death panels for one). Why has he left it up to the talk shows and town hall meetings? Why has he gone all pussy on us? Ed and Kucinich are correct, it's the progressive left that put the Dems in power, not the centrists. As it is, the public option is a shameful compromise on single payer health care. We need to get rid of these parasitic sociopath health insurance monsters who profit from death and bankruptcy. They are the enemies of the people.
