20. Can't be further from the truth!
Schiff is against bailing out the banks and big companies. He wants them to fail, which is what a free market would allow. It is the government which continues to bail out these failed institutions which ensures their profits while pushing their losses onto the tax payer. No business is too big to fail!!!! We need to stop the moral hazard that government allows.

5. O'Donnel sure put's the doubletalk of schiff the Politician in the spotlight.
O'Donnell called schiff out on his statemet of so called "Government Intervention" being the reason for the Health Insurance costs being so high, which is totally Falso, and Schiff needed to be put down for that lie.

While in many cases, Schiff is very astute regarding the Economy, but it is apparent that he knows nothing about the Fraud in the Health Care Industry.

His statemetment of Lowering Taxes while on the other side of his mouth he advances Adding Taxes on Health Benefits to "Offset" the loss in regular taxes, his cover was blown.

If one thinks about that for a moment, it would be apparent that the sickest people, who had the misfortune of getting a serious illness or accident and treated for it by health benefits, would look forward to an inflated Tax bill at Tax time, while the Young, Healthy folk are not burdened with Social Insurance paid for by all.

Peter Schiff blew it big time if he is serious about running for Office. He didn't even offer free basic medical checkups or care.. nothing, zilch.

6. The crux of the battle.
Democrats want health care reform, to make health care available and accessible to all, regardless of their health or economic status.

ReTHUGs want health insurance reform, to get health insurance completely deregulated and outside of the control of government. For sure, we'll be looking at a new Enron-style scam involving Blue Cross/Blue Shield and other giant insurers.

Our goals are equal access for all, and the health and well-being of our population.

Their goals are total deregulation and unrestricted profiteering, and they'll happily step over the bodies of their countrymen to get them.

21. Complete fallacy
The free market does NOT create monopolies. Government intervention into the free market is what creates monopolies. It was government intervention into healthcare back in 1973 with the HMO ACT that accelerated costs. A free market always generates competition, which forces companies to fight over lower costs. More government regulation crushes that competition by allowing the strong to become stronger and government allows the special interests to control that power with a government/business alliance. This is what needs to stop!!!

43. Nonsense.Free market competiton leads to buying out and take overs till only a couple left
Like ATT vs...you could count on one hand their 'competition'.

Health ins was and is being absorbed by bigger and bigger companies till there would soon be only a couple of corporations large enough to compete with each other. Gov. intervention broke up monopolies but is no longer being enforced...Just look at what Enron did. Free markets leads to the survival of the strongest...weeding out all competition till only a couple will remain.
Gov. regulation is the only thing stopping corporations from controlling everything. It is the only entity large enough to "protect" the consumer from unfair pricing and pollution. Every time deregulation occurs the market becomes controlled by the wealthiest willing to do anything to eliminate competition. Naomi Klein describes the Chicago school free market trials in other nations and their complete failure in the "Shock Doctrine". There is no free market, only "Economic Royalists" closing the markets down to those who cannot afford the entry fee.

Nixon's HMO Act of 1973 did cause spiraling costs and significant rationing of care. Nixon was doing the bidding of Kaiser. Government working on behalf of corporate interests usually leads to diminished competition. Government working to protect consumers and employees leads to a level playing field and increased competition.

60. O Baloney
Free market unfettered by any rules would be chaos. Like a game of basketball with no referees. Who would win? The biggest bully.

It is the job of the government to regulate commerce.

We need to break up businesses too big to fail not reward the bullies with a hands off approach. That is what led to the economic crisis.

And Schiff? He's an idiot. There has been no decoupling. Anyone who invested on his advice lost big time over the past two years.

I enjoy letting these dip shits choke on their own words, but O'Donnell didn't let the guy get a full sentence out. That wasn't cool, in my book. Too much like vannity and bor, except, honest to God, he was worse I think.

I don't enjoy a debate when one party is not allowed to even express his point. This was sad for liberal TV. I hope this doesn't become the norm anytime soon.

65. I love how he say's Insurance is for Catastrophic events...
Edited on Wed Aug-12-09 10:17 AM by unapatriciated
I had an HMO and a catastrophic plan when my son became ill in 1990. Guess what neither plan wanted to pay for medical treatment for my son. The HMO didn't cover the specialist or care needed (out of network) and the catastrophic plan which was supposed to cover major medical not covered by the HMO denied coverage as well (they said it was HMO's responsibility}. So instead of spending time with my critically ill child or my other children, I had to fight my Insurance Companies. I still ended up having to sell my home to pay medical bills. The Insurance Industry is in business to make a profit they don't give a damn about providing health care. They consider people like my son a liability and push them to the public sector as fast as they can.

They didn't mind taking my hard earned dollars in premiums for over ten years, when it came time that I needed that coverage they blocked it at every turn. The sad part is I'm not unique is this, I met many families over the years during my son's many stays at Children's Los Angeles who had no choice but to file bankruptcy and put their chronically and critically ill children on medicare.

He was one of many who saw the inevitable collapse of the credit bubble, but anyone who was following his financial advice lost a lot of money.

I did enjoy his television appearances and I've had some communication with him. He's a personable guy, but misguided in my opinion.

The Posters above are also wrong. He is not a beloved figure among the Republican base. He was an adviser to Ron Paul and a fierce critic of McCain and his economic team. His debate with Art Laffer last year was a riot.

47. It is sad that
you along with the vast majority of T.V watching Americans believe that the one who speaks the loudest and gets the last word in is the one who wins, rather than paying attention to what was actually being said.

He kept saying the free market should decide but are the free market idealogues so afraid of competition that they would deny people the right to choose which healthcare to buy in an exchange? If he's really for the free market and he believes the government would do such a lousy job then what is he afraid of?

Then throwing out his OPINION that the reason tuition goes up is a result of government subsidized loans. What a load of crap! I can tell you from my own experience that student loans contributed to a mere fraction of the total cost of going to college and then he sidestepped the question about private school tuition going up despite a lack of government intervention.

For the short attention span, soundbyte hearing, instant gratification crowd. HE TALKED THE LOUDEST. SO HE WON.

I think LO is a really sharp guy who overstepped his bounds. That behavior allows you, FR, to get away with a plug/post for Schiff.

The KEY to this debate is that there is no substitute good or service for health care. You must have it. There is no choice. You get it, or you die. It's like saying I don't want to pay that much for water, so I'll choose to spend my money on a bigger TV.

No amount of "talking" would change this fact...free market is code for fascist corporatism where the richest control everything and gov is used to enforce their rules and protect their holdings. Better quit trying to reason and debate these pricks because they are mounting a take over...deputizing right wing thugs to shout down democracy and eventually beat and murder us into complicity. Free market leads to monopolies which leads to economic slavery. Stop with the one upsmanship and silence these greedy bastards any way you can. control the dialogue, twist the garbage & lies into republican spin as the elitist republican desperately was trying to do!

I love O'Donnell's passion and dedication...not to just sit there and let the republican clown rattle on like a paid political commercial O'Donnell recognized it immediately what this that was all about and attempting to do which was getting out as much republican propaganda as possible as the lying republican weasel was certainly trying to do.

O'Donnell's passion is much like my own and why I recognize it and embrace it so readily.

Lawrence O'Donnell deserves his own MSNBC show.

51. LO needed a chill pill
I've watched Schiff for sometime now and he has been spot on in his economical analyses. I'm not so thrilled with his free market views but he has been right about our economical direction.
To say LO smacked him down is about as juvenile as how LO handled the whole interview. I also have enjoyed LO many times in the past but this interview was unwatchable. Ask a question, before he gets off half a sentence, ask another question, etc, etc.
Schiff may not have my respect as a potential politician, but he has won me over with his ability to analyze the present and predict future financial directions.
Larry, next time let your guest talk before you trash them. But by all means, don't hold back when dealing with republicans and their talking points! Unfortunately, you came off more like BillO the bully and we certainly don't need that kind of discourse.

They seem to want to turn every screw or bolt with a screwdriver. The free market doesn't work with everything.

2000 years, and the only people who got an education were the rich or elite. Now the common person can get one.

If the free market was so great, why didn't it get an education for the common man in the past 2000 years? Wasn't much government back then.

52. half of the posters and reactionary children
The first point to be made here is that just because Peter Schiff is nominally GOP doesn't mean that he is is for corporate elitism. He is very against the monopoly capitalism that is being practiced in the US (a lot more so than some of the Obama fan boys on this board). The problem with DU is that people are so shrill they behave like bulls goaded with a red rag of the republican party. As soon as they see it they just react rather than listening, thinking and then typing.

Feels like the board is populated by high-schoolers trying to get their post count up.

56. Schiff is arguing that the sky is green and the grass is blue
Private healthcare is available in the UK and Europe for a price - and guess what? It is at a fraction of the cost the cost of what it would be in the U.S. Just as prescription medication from private pharmacies in Canada are far cheaper than in the United States.

Schiff was unable to make one single valid point because he doesn't have any. He is much like the old Communist era Radio-Albania, raving away about how wonderful life is with their unprecedented tractor tire production and grateful workers celebrating their great workers state. Damn the real world - and rant away with ideology and graph paper economics. He would have made a great Soviet era aparatacheck.

61. Peter Schiff made tons of valid points
First off, the private healthcare in Canada only covers what the government doesn't. Amazingly, about %30 of the cost in canada is paid for by private insurance, while far less people have it. So your statement is misleading at best.

Second, if you have read anything about Austrian economics or any book by Peter Schiff you'd know its far from the graph paper economics you are talking about. Comparing him to the Soviets is absurd - Russian Socialism is the furthest thing from Austrian free market economics.

63. repeating silly cliches rooted in completely discredited theory is not making valid points
it is being a brainwashed automaton.

One simply needs to look at the real world and compare the cost of privately purchased healthcare that competes with state-sponsored universal healthcare in every single country in the world that has state-sponsored universal healthcare to see just how nutty this nonsense is.

Just like the Soviet apologist of yester-year Schiff is deciding to refuse to accept reality that is right in front of ones own eyes and chooses instead to embrace ideology. This requires a conscious choice for someone to decide that the world of reality does not exist - only the world of ideology.

62. This is why the left never wins. "He wouldn't let the guy talk."
Boo-hoo! Do you think people on the right complain when Hannity/O'Reilly don't let anyone talk?
This is not about Harvard academia, this is about getting your message across.

69. He doesn't understand the first thing about how the existing markets work.
And has no clue what that mythical creature called a real "free market" actually is.
