1. Those Medicare recipients should be ashamed. And no, they did
not pay for their socialized medicine. I am paying for it now, along with their social security retirement.

5. Not so - Seniors pay for themselves on SS.
Edited on Thu Aug-06-09 06:55 AM by katkat
I don't know about Medicare, but it's a rightwing fable that today's seniors are living off today's young people when it comes to Social Security.

You can get from SS at any time the info showing how much they've taken from you over the years in SS taxes. I plugged that into a little program that assumed I had instead put it in a passbook account earning 5% compound interest (a conservative long term rate, recollect that in the 1980s rates were in the double digits), and it totaled up to something like $350,000.

Then figure what that gives off in interest alone now at 4%, which you can earn on long term CDs even now at a historically low rate, and the interest alone pays for the annual SS benefits I receive. When I croak, the government will still be sitting on almost all the principal they taxed from me plus the interest that principal earned over the 40-odd years before I retired.

The people who would say otherwise are either misinformed or people trying to do away with SS by breeding resentment among younger people based on false information.

14. I was told in the 1980's by St. Ronnie of the Right, that if I accepted
the largest tax increase on the middle class in payroll taxes to pay for the seniors and to place a portion in the trust for my generation that SS/Medicare would be saved.

I said OKAY, if that's what it takes.

What I DID NOT DO is go around screaming, hollering, threatening and yelling to throw the seniors off SS/Medicare NOW so I would be able to collect.

18. Seniors paying for Medicare
There are some variations on Medicare, thanks to the Repigs trying to help the poor private insurance companies, but here's how it works for me, just to give younger folks the idea that this is not a free ride:

Basic Medicare:
Paid for by taxes over a working lifetime. Do the taxes cover, fall short, or exceed the actual cost? I dunno.
This covers hospitals, etc.

Plan B:
Oh, you might actually want to see a doctor? Fork out of your pocket for Plan B.

Plan D:
Oh, you need prescriptions? Fork out of your pocket for Plan D, and enjoy falling into the Medicare donut hole (as I did in May), where you pay 100% for your prescriptions after that up until your cost hits $6000 a year.

As far as I know Plan Bs and Plan Ds are profit making enterprises for the insurance companies that provide them. Note especially that under the current system, the cost of prescriptions cannot be negotiated with Big Pharma by the government for people under Plan Ds, thanks to Congress.

20. Re: Seniors paying for Medicare
I forgot to include shelling out for Medigap insurance, which brings Plan A and Plan B up to the level of normal health insurance, except for the missing prescription coverage.

So out of the 4 expenses, 3 come out of pocket currently and 1 is paid for out of payroll deductions (fully or not.)

I haven't done anything myself but do the only normal reaction WTF. :wtf: I don't really get the statement by Obama the only ad I've seen against this was by the DNC so what groups is he talking about, even Faux have spoke against it. ??? Very confusing. President Obama is great Preseident but he's bemused me on his last statement.

10. Sounds like the same old rhetoric from the GOP - allow me to rant for a moment
What bothers me most is not that they "protest" the health reform, but that they don't offer any alternative solutions. The republicans simply would rather ignore the problem rather than apply some constructive thinking outside their corn fed agenda. Shame on every one of those "protesters" if thats what we can call them. Every single one of them benefits from the government that they so despise. They are "Right" about one thing - it is give and take - they take from the government provided health care programs currently in place but only give back biased lies and misconceptions. The GOP needs to grow up.

The GOP claims that the health bill is a go around for government approved abortions and to kill off old people, thats just absurd, because we all eventually become the old people they claim we are attempting to dispose of. Idiots.

21. Jesus was a socialist. If he were alive today
he would be leading his flock to demand a completely free healthcare system as he himself provided when he healed the sick and raised the dead and never charged anyone a cent.

Hard to imagine the Jesus from the bible, shouting down healthcare for all, unless you're delusional, in which case, I'm all for free mental health treatment for these deluded, insane individuals.

No wonder us blue states have to support you red states. The red states have no idea of what is in their best interests and have to prey off the blue states.

19. Very weak moderation, completely failed to maintain order
The meeting was overwhelmed by an organized disruption, but there is no sign of anyone actually running it in the first place.

Every public meeting needs an "alpha" person in charge, who has and is willing to exert legal authority to maintain order and eject people who refuse to comply. If necessary, you need to have security people to enforce ejection orders, and be prepared back them up with law enforcement.
