O'Reilly Rages Against Joan Walsh Over Tiller Murder (VIDEO)

Wow. Joan Walsh went on the O'Reilly Factor tonight having publicly vowed to be well-prepared to defend the reproductive rights of women and the legality of Dr. George Tiller's clinical practice, and truly doled out some major ownage without raising her voice or raising the temperature at all. It was an artful performance of talking headery, and what can I say? By the end of their two segments, O'Reilly is reduced to a gibbering, shout-faced wreck. If you need to know how far Walsh pummeled O'Reilly into pure insipidity, wait for the moment where he says to her: "My constitutional rights say I can say what I say, you can say what you say, as vile as you say it, you can say it, and I would never condemn you for saying it. You are misguided, you have blood on your hands because you portrayed this man as a hero."

Right. Bill O'Reilly would never condemn you for speaking your mind, if you don't count the whole YOU ARE VILE and YOU HAVE BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS condemnation part!

(UPDATE: Joan Walsh has a very amusing post up: "Why I Went On 'The O'Reilly Factor.'" Best riff: "It was a kaleidoscopic nightmare, a TV acid trip, and I don't do acid. It almost seems like O'Reilly does, but I don't think so. The man is driven by demons. God bless him and save him.")

Why I went on "The O'Reilly Factor"

(UPDATED after The O'Reilly Factor aired)

http://www.salon.com/opinion/walsh/politics/2009/06/12/oreilly_walsh/

I was surprised when so many people I respect told me not to appear on "The O'Reilly Factor." I'd attacked Bill O'Reilly for his jihad against Dr. George Tiller, and he asked me on to discuss my "accusations." I thought that was fair. I could explain my point of view to his face; to say no felt like being a punk. But smart and supportive friends, family, co-workers, Twitterers and media stars all over the country reached out and suggested I skip it.

I thought about it, but not for long. I like doing TV. I'm not terrible at it. I criticized him, I should have the guts to repeat it to his face. I also need to say that when I announced I'd said yes, every one of the doubters, and more, sent me great advice and good wishes. (Thanks to Media Matters who, unbidden, just had staff start sending me clips to watch, about O'Reilly's lies. And if you're not on Twitter, well, Twitter rocked for me.) My daughter coached me; so did my litigator ex-husband, so did my friend and Salon co-conspirator Kerry Lauerman. It takes a village to debate Bill O'Reilly!

His producers also helped by doing that thing they do: "Hey, Bill really respects you for coming on the show! He wants to have a conversation! It'll be fine!" (And they promoted my appearance on the show by identifying me on the Web site as "Joan Walsh of Slate.com.")

Well, it was so not fine. I think the high or low point was when he shrieked at me, "You have blood on your hands!" At one point he also either told me to "Shut up" or "Be quiet," I can't remember. (If I'm wrong about that, when I see the clip, I'll correct it. UPDATE: Actually, he shouted "Stop talking!") He called me "vile." I think I said he was vile, too. There were a couple of "I know you are but what am I?" moments that I'm not totally proud of. It was a kaleidoscopic nightmare, a TV acid trip, and I don't do acid. It almost seems like O'Reilly does, but I don't think so. The man is driven by demons. God bless him and save him.

1. I cannot watch that piece of trash bullying her.
Stop watching after he said "stop it." He's an abusive piece of crap.

4. Good for you! I never click to watch anyone from Fox.
They deserve no place in my peace-loving life.

10. I don't want to watch either.
O'Reilly is not worth the time. The only influence he has of note is his enabling of terrorists. Otherwise, he makes no difference. Of course that's a big, most unpleasant and dangerous influence, but it's all he can do. No one with any sense is ever really effected by his hot air. All the more pathetic when he calls for boycotts of, oh, France.

Worth watching.

13. Absolutely...
...my reason for posting this (and especially Joan's follow-up piece from Salon) was to showcase her strength, not to make anyone here suffer through another of Bill's bullying escapades.

The payoff of Joan putting him in his place was well worth enduring the O'Reilly ramp-up. I can understand how others just don;t want to watch him under any circumstances, but if they can, I'd encourage them to take a deep breath and hang in there for Joan's triumphant role in the segment.

He is a bully.. He is a jerk. Maybe if people stopped watching Fox News..they might
float off into obscurity, one can only hope.

Sorry...one minute into this and I turned it off. The guy is a turn off, his style and message are a turn off and this show is nauseating.

3. He is an abusive psychotic.....but she cut his nuts off ....high.
I hate watching the self promoting, conceded sack of waste as well...but this was gratifying to see him boil over into his frenzy of attempted intimidation, and see it all melt in front of Joan's cool demeanor. This lady took him to the shed.

billo....you really are an obsolescent buffoon. Do yourself and the right wing nut cakes a favor....go away. Maybe they can latch on to someone who deserves at least an ounce of respect.

you, certainly do NOT!

With equal parts composure and righteous anger. I can't think of anyone who could have done better. Kudos to Joan. :applause:

11. O'Reilly devours those rants like candy. He's just like Sarah Palin...
...a supreme narcissist, who has a need for attention that surpasses heroin addiction. Neither of them care where the attention comes from. For Palin, she seems to be more comfortable playing the role of "innocent victim." For O'Reilly, it's "exposing the evil" of anyone who disagrees with him. Both appear to be clinically, mentally imbalanced, and both of them have unlimited access to the media and the national stage. Pretty disturbing stuff, but then again, most people can;t take their eyes off of a good car crash. It sucks, but it's also human nature, and there's no getting around it.

8. Joan fared quite well.
I'd say she got the better of him. She remained calm while he raged and kept making good, solid points. Didn't go to pieces as some of Billo's guest targets do. Billo evidently couldn't even reply to her point at the end about the Knoxville Unitarian church killer having enjoyed his incitements.

17. Prediction
Joan will be invited to come back on FixedNoise, and when she declines, O'Reilly will claim victory and accuse her of being too cowardly to defend the blood she has on her hands. He's outta control and has been for a very long time.

18. I Always Say "No" When Fox Calls
I have been invited to appear on different Fox shows as an expert in my field. Hungry author that I am, I always say "No". Walsh was fine, but as Paul Simon once said to me "you don't mess with the guy with the microphone.” O’Reilly is nothing without guests. He should be, simply, ignored by potential guests and viewers alike. This will end him - slowly and surely.

Similar to "I'm going to pray for you."

Joan Walsh is NOT playing with Bill O'Reilly
