2. I watched Hardball today and he opened his show with this

He didn't say anything that I would say was anti abortion but maybe he has said something in the past, I dont know. Dr. Tiller and Dr. Hern are brave men and it was very brave for Dr. Hern to get on TV and say what needed to be said about these anti-choice terrorists. I hope he is safe.

Pregnancies with fatal complications

“For the past 35 years I have expected to be shot when I walk out of my house.” He says, “I expect to be shot doing anything that I’m doing, because the anti-abortion people have sent the message “Do what we tell you to do or we will kill you” and they do, they have they’ve killed a number of doctors and other people.”

He pulls no punches when describing violent anti-abortion extremists.

“This is a fascist, totalitarian, terrorist movement that will take no prisoners that will stop at nothing, including assassination to impose their will on other people,” He says, “This is what they want, this is a terrorist movement.”

His name and the address of his clinic appear on a number of anti-abortion websites in what Hern calls “Hit lists”, and he says anti-abortion protesters are out front of his office almost everyday, but what strikes me most about Dr. Hern is not how he is dealing with what is happening outside the clinic, but how seriously he takes what is happening inside, behind the bulletproof glass, with the women he serves.

“This is an abortion intensive care unit. We take care of women that have very special needs, many of whom have advanced pregnancies, many of whom have desired pregnancies that have very serious if not fatal complications.” He says.

12. Dr. Hern is courageous, but he needs to speak more explicitly

to the grounds for doing a late-term abortion. He needs to describe in medical detail the kinds of dangers that require such a drastic intervention. Certainly one was mentioned in another post on DU and that is that, occasionally, a foetus dies in the womb for some perhaps unknown reason. Usually the foetus will self-abort, but sometimes it does not. If it is just left in the womb, I have heard that it can begin to decay and poision the mother.

One of my friends had this happen to her when I lived in Europe. She really wanted that baby. Heartsick, after quite a bit of pressure from her doctor and her family, at the last minute, she finally went to the hospital where they gave her something and the baby was aborted. She was not extremely late term although she was far enough into her pregnancy that her pregnancy was quite visible. I should think that a similar situation could arise very late in the pregnancy.
