The rest of the country tolerates 8 years of Bush and these whiney little bitches can't even take 3 months of Obama. For f*ck's sake!

6. Not this crap again!
First of all it is illegal for 'any state' to secede from the union.

Secondly - Over 3.5 million Texans voted for Obama, more than any other state other than New York and California. There are a lot of progressives in Texas.

If you do not support all 50 states of OUR UNION then perhaps YOU should move to another country.

16. If Texas left the USA would gain a lot.
A solid Republican electoral college state would be lost nearly assuring that Democrats would win presidential elections for decades.

The USA would save lots of money on its border with Mexico because the new Texas DEA and army of Texas would have to patrol the border with Mexico.

The USA would no longer have to give any money to Texas when hurricanes blew in.

The USA would not have to help when there was drought.

We could move NASA from Houston back into the USA in a state like Louisiana giving us an excuse to build a nice new state of the art facility.

Then the folks in Texas could enjoy going through border checkpoints when visiting the USA (after providing a passport and the necessary visas.

Texas could hold off the Mexican army on its own, and when Mexico invaded Texas the USA could invade Texas, reconquer it, divide it up into multiple territories and rule them much like they ruled the south during reconstruction.

If the majority of the politicians in power want this I do not see what you can do to stop it aside from leaving Texas and moving to the USA sometime between the time the law is voted and the governor signs himself out of a job.

You're talking to the WRONG people- "Texas Bashers", indeed. Say those words to your neighbors, don't call US unpatriotic!!!

The majority of Texans DO NOT want to secede.
And not only Republicans live in Texas there are a hell of a lot of us democrats here too.
And for people to be saying 'don't let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out' is down right rude and uncalled for.
And the Americans that do not support all 50 states of our union are UNPATRIOTIC.

3. Let Repubs all move to Texas. We can finally finish that 20 ft. fence Bush expensed on our dime

and encircle the entire state!

Repubs all living in one state would be a hoot to watch! They would be eating their young within the first year.

But wouldn't it be great "pay-per-view" to watch?

Texas is part of America - and many Texans are DEMOCRATS!
I is unpatriotic to want to divide up the union.
Secession is illegal in all 50 states.
It is UNAMERICAN to not support all 50 state of the United States of America!

And I understand why you're upset. But I'm sure you recognize that the criticism (much of which is tongue in cheek) doesn't come out of thin air. I say this as someone who's Dad lives near Houston, and as someone who has very seriously considered moving to Austin.

Obviously many Texans are Democrats and or moderates. Unfortunately many are crazy conservative bible thumpers who want to secede, etc. And we hear stories about the state board of education there recently setting new standards for textbooks regarding evolution/creationism (and in 2004, removing references to sex/contraception) and so on.

In other words, I see both sides.

19. I see both sides as well, and I'm near your dad - what I'm tired of is
People bashing Texas as a whole instead of our crazy politicians. (Which, may I point out, were often elected by less than 50%, and from severely gerrymandered districts.)

And may I also point out that, in spite of that, our major cities are at least purple, trending blue. Austin, of course, but also Dallas and, I believe, Houston, are actually blue. Not sure about San Antonio, and it's kind of a pain to research on my dialup, but I'm virtually certain it's at least purple.

Bash the nutjobs all you want! I'll help! Just try not to bop me as well!

Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 02:17 PM by ihavenobias
But trust me, we're 'bashing' the right wing nut jobs. Unfortunately TX has a good amount of them, and they're very vocal and over the top, so it gives the state a bad reputation.

My GF is really starting to sour on the idea of moving to Austin in light of the recent tea parties, this new poll, and the fact that the state board of education changed the evolution/contraception/sex standards (per my previous comment). That's because it feeds into her negative assumptions that she had, and these things just put them on steroids. She's worried she'll be surrounded by nuts and bible thumpers, etc.

I know, "come in and turn the state blue", etc., but I understand her concern.

36. No, in former DeLay land
So maybe I'm wrong about nuts and bible-thumpers in Austin, although looking at the turnout for the tea party Perry shot off his mouth at, I'm not sure.

Frankly, only sort of on topic, I'm still waiting for someone to prove to me why Austin is so cool, aside from the fact that it's been the only spot of blue until recently. I take the drive there from time to time to look around and try to figure out the mystique, and it's OK, certainly better than Houston, but I haven't detected the mecca people gush about.

37. Well
Based on my visit there, it's a great mix of nature and urban (my perspective is from Chicago, so keep that in mind).

Beautiful botanical gardens, the year round Barton Springs, good restaurants, tons of live music, some cool buildings downtown, Lake Travis, next to hill country, etc. Plus there are always different events going on, and if that's not enough, San Antonio (with it's zoo, river walk, amusement park and so on) is a reasonable driving distance.

38. Yeah, I *am* comparing it to San Diego, I must admit.
But even with the housing prices going down, I can't go back until I retire, as CA does not have a reciprocal agreement with other states on teaching certificates. :-(

What *kind* of music, and what times of day? Last time I looked (a while ago, I must admit), it seemed mostly kids' stuff, and later at night than this old person can handle. (There's some live music here in DeLay land, but 10PM - start time! - is not when I wish to go out and listen to it!) Oh, and in locations that looked pretty ratty to my jaundiced eye.

Basically, I want to live in a tourist town, where entertainment is available at my beck and call, starting early in nice hotel ballrooms or in a nice amphitheatre in good weather. And where theatre companies occasionally try out shows bound for Broadway, not just the "touring companies." ;) Ah well, maybe someday. Yeah, I got spoiled.

Thanks for listening. I may defend Texas against the broad brush, but that doesn't mean I don't want out myself. (Either that or find a better place in it, or have the place I currently call home change....!)

40. CA would be my first choice.
But yes, it's SO damn expensive! That's a big part of the Austin appeal, the 'liberal oasis' in the ultimate red state.

You've never heard that Austin is the (?):

"...Austin had more live music venues per capita than such music hotbeds as Nashville, Memphis, Los Angeles, Las Vegas or New York City..."

I wasn't there long so I didn't get too deep into the music, but it seems they have a little bit of everything, i.e. from stuff that appeals to college students to stuff that appeals to retirees and everything in between.

And there always various events and things to do: http://www.austin360.com/calendar/content/events/index.html

47. To live or to visit?
I love Chicago, just not in the winter. There's also a good music scene here as well with a wide range of artists (yes, even stuff for you old folks ;).

Great museums, the lake, live entertainment (music, comedy and more), tons of bars and clubs (I hate clubs), several pro-sports teams and many great restaurants. And while there is the hustle and bustle of downtown with the great architecture and skyscrapers, there are also plenty of quiet, tree lined streets and dog parks.

49. It's awesome, but it has less 'nature' than Texas of course.
If someone didn't mind cold and snow for a good chunk of the year, I can't imagine a better place to live. Cost of living is high, but not nearly as high as CA of NY. It has big city opportunities for fun and variety without the typical big city arrogance.

And per my previous comment, there are tons of pluses.

50. Nature (except in the abstract, as in care for the environment)
Means nothing to me past my backyard, decent-looking neighborhoods, and some nice parks, preferably along the lines of Balboa Park in San Diego. (i.e., more to do than just look at the trees and birds.... ;-> )

Dunno if I could hack the cold, though. I've never lived anyplace that actually had much of a winter.

Dunno if I could hack the latitude, now that I think of it. I was considering moving to Seattle at one point, and visited for a month in the summer. I *loathed* the way the sun went down late and came up early. And I'd probably loathe the opposite in the winter.

You're right, I should give Austin another try!

because if he were arrested for anything it would be for 'sedition' (inciting people to secede) and he didn't do that.
If you reread his full statements then you will see that he was not 'calling for secession'.

I hope that the crazies in the Republican party do not try to pull Texas out of the USA. If Texas did it, other states would likely follow and that would be either the end of the USA or the beginning of a civil war, a real lose lose situation.

10. Cenk has probably never met a Texan....
I live in Mexico now.....Mexico, NOT New Mexico. This town is swarming with Texans. They are some nice people, but this reminds me of when I was 18 years old and traveling Europe back in the 60's. I would run into Californians, and you could tell they were from California. You would run into TEXANS, and you knew they were from Texas.

The "texas mentality" is quite unique. You see...they are #1. They have a flag with the single star on it, and up until Alaska came along, they were THE BIGGEST and best <cough, cough>. Everything Texan was bigger and better. Even today, when I talk with the Texans down here, the same mentality persists. They are TEXANS...and they are "special". They actually believe this bull shit.

I've driven through Texas...and I mean THROUGH Texas a least a half dozen time in the last ten years, and that is one BIG flat f*cking state, with a lot of flat ugly land, and a few big cities. Granted, they have oil. Great! They also have El Paso, and if you have never smelled El Paso, you ought to make a trip down there. It is memorable.

I guess the point I want to make is, it doesn't surprise me in the least that a large percentage of those goat ropers want to secede or think they are able to "threaten" the rest of the US with secession. Let them go!! Let them be their own country, between Mexico and the US. I'm all for it. In fact, we could give a few of the other southern states the option as well.

I think it's a "gene" they have them makes them think they are something special somehow. I don't see it. I don't get it. They aren't as far as I can tell....but THEY think they are. I spent a year in the Army at Ft. Hood, Texas...and I can tell you there are more red neck, goat ropers in Texas than any other part of the USA...any party I've ever seen anyway.

Go for it. Adios amigos, and don't let Oklahoma hit you in the ass on the way out!!!

Can't we use one of those small scale nuclear devices so that it doesn't carry over to the rest of the country? It would be a pre-emptive act against a foreign hostile government and we have done it once already. :)

Okay, am I the only one who thinks that even Cenk is taking this a bit too seriously? You can't secede, so it is easy to vote for it in protest. I don't think most people are really talking about secession seriously, whether they say it or not. Lighten up folks.
