youtube recently has announced that it, along with Viacom will be promoting feature films, TV and reserving only a small slot to the users that are "the little guys." This is a disgrace, and a violation of our rights, since people like you and i, through watching and posting videos, gave youtube its money and power. the fact that 13 year olds speeding up their voice and being absolutely stupid get the approval of youtube, and thought provoking content gets tossed to the wayside is an absolute atrocity.

so watch this video, as i "advertise" some items that i doubt youtube will be endorsing. if this change revolts you too, please, make a video response and let your voice be heard. comment it, subscribe to it, do everything that you want. do what you can, while you STILL CAN.

WARNING: to those users who are opposed to obscene language, this video does contain some, however it drives the point home. look past the language and toward the message please. thank you to all of you who participate.

THIS IS HOW CORPORATE AMERICA IS GOING TO TRY TO CONTROL CYBERSPACE JUST AS IT ATTEMPTS TO CONTROL AMERICA.

1. "violation of our rights"??? BWAHAHAHAAA!!! Um, it's THEIR site...
Get over it. It becomes corporatized and locked down - some other site will start up and become the new hotbed of creativity. It's the way of the world.

4. its still wrong.
it may be their site, however, they are slamming the door on the people who made the site what it is today. disregarding us is a blatant slap in the face, and we shouldn't have to stand for it.

6. Exactly which right of ours is violated? Where in US law or the Consitution is it?

EDIT: And why is it wrong for the owners of a website to do what they want with it? Don't like it? Don't go there.

8. glad you asked!
personally, and maybe i'm just someone who believes in actual ETHICS, it pays off more to salute and pay more attention to the people who made the site what it was in the first place, instead of pushing them to the background because of big corporate sponsors. it wouldn't make sense for me to go and be a part of another community if the same fate will be suffered.

instead, there should be a sense of equality on youtube after the merger, where people can gain access to the corporate sponsors' content, but also showcase the content of the users of youtube that maybe have no kind of money, and make videos for the site for entertainment and informational purposes only, as a hobby.

this is just another case where money talks, and a man without a dime is still seen as subhuman, instead of a member of the global community.

Believe it or not it fucking takes money to run a website. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Edit: Also, with additional revenue via advertising they can upgrade and expand the site and make it more efficient which is for the users(and the company).

13. calm down.
trust me, i know it makes money to make a website work. i'm involved with an upcoming website called epicwebz, and busting my ass to make sure it's a success, so the owner can break even. but a place like youtube already had a lot of support monetarily.

it would be nice if they used the extra financial backing to revamp the place and make it more friendly to the little guy, but since that hardly seems to be the plan, my outrage is totally justified.

14. Yeah.....
...I'm sure you know exactly what their plan is. Way to assume.

Also, a lot of support monetarily? Google's losing $1.65 million daily by keeping Youtube running as is. You're lucky they've been nice enough to keep it around this long with them losing that much money on it so you can get your precious "vlogs" out.

7. I agree with you 100% even though I found your video somewhat odd.
I'm so pissed at YouTube I could spit nails since they've started defacing and removing probably THOUSANDS of wonderful fan videos featuring music from Warner group artists. Many of the songs to which I'm referring are from the 70s and were from before the days of MTV, so no videos were produced for them. Fans of great progressive bands like Yes, Genesis and less progressive but still influential bands like The Police and Steely Dan have spent lord knows how many hours putting together photo and video montages which add a whole new dimension to the music, and which no doubt will spur many people to seek out these bands' albums... but NUUUUUUU! They actually go in and remove the audio or, even worse, put some fucking oughties rap shit they want to promote over the video. Man, you should SEE the howls of outrage in the comments below these videos, and frankly I'm at the head of the pack hurling the most vulgar and outlandish insults I can think of at the fucking blue suit fucktard assholes who have brought this about.

Fuck them. I'll never buy another CD from any of their artists, EVER AGAIN.

And with that, I completely understand where your anger is coming from and I imagine that soon there will be a day when I avoid YouTube altogether just on principle. :grr:

9. thanks!
i go for odd. since corporate sponsorship is what caused this mess in the first place, i opted to make a video where i promoted exactly what youtube probably would never touch. kind of an interesting play on irony.

Dream Theater man...good freakin choice. and the mentions of Yes, Genesis, etc also made me happy. can't forget King Crimson!

18. Trust me, I haven't!
I just had a good laugh earlier this evening when I discovered that my oldest brother (born in 1951) who piqued my interest in Yes back in the very early 80s when I was about 12-ish, didn't even know what bands the members of ELP were in before forming ELP. At least he got King Crimson (Greg Lake) right, with some prompting. But he'd never heard of The Nice (Emerson).

He had quite the reaction when he discovered that I'm many times over the "prog-head" he claims to be.

3. If you don't like the site, don't use it. Don't frequent it, don't upload to it.
No one forces you to use YOUTUBE. If it doesn't meet your needs, eschew it.

20. Agreed. This guy'sTV remote has a last channel button.
And this guy's computer browser has a "back" function. If he doesn't like what they're doing, he can navigate away from the site.

Yeah, it's unfair, But it IS their site.

And yeah, there's 2 "r's" in my real name. And a big fat (D) after it. Like everyone else here.

15. One door closes, another one opens.
If the need is there, someone else will come along and take their place. There are already other services out there. They will see a lot more traffic, I'm sure.

Personally I wish we could embed videos from content providers other than You Tube. There is so much more better quality content out there if you look.

16. interesting point
youtube has become such a standard in the market that you're right, usually only youtube videos are able to be embedded. which give me an idea for the site that i help run.

thanks mate!

Hint: I used to consult in that regard. Just kidding though. Glad I could be an inspiration. Keep us posted on any updates if you will. Most of the media I use on a regular basis is internet based. I could always use another good source.

17. I agree with Bloo
It's their website, just as DU is Skinner's. If you don't like it, then leave.
The First Amendment only protects us from GOVERNMENT censorship. Not that from
a private entity. It's called capitalism. Work within it, or work to change it.
That't what freedom, and DU is all about. Put up or STFU.

24. but what if Skinner took all the money earned by OUR donations and turned the site
into an arm of the Republican party..would you have a legit reason to howl? I think so. I really don't care that much about youtube, I only link to it from here mostly...so it is no skin off my nose, but I can see how the people, who worked hard to get their voices out there and acutally made money for the site, only to have their participation pulled in favor of corporate heads, might be upset.

25. He could turn it into an arm of the Nazi Party if he'd like.
It's not up to us. It's HIS site, he owns it, he does all the work to maintain it, and donations to it are entirely voluntary. The site is not mine, not yours. Donations, which are optional, are not stock purchases.

And how would we respond if he changed the site's focus? We'd howl, and go elsewhere.

That's market forces at work.

Skinner doesn't "owe" us anything. He provides a service. I imagine that the service he provides reflects his personal, political attitudes, so that makes his work rather pleasant.

19. Jeez, it's a privately owned site, and you signed their TOS at signup.
Want a guaranteed place to rant freely without censorship on the internet?

Then do what I do, and buy a domain name, hosting, and learn how to code or use Wordpress!
