2. Fascism makes for strange bedfellows
Here I am, a gay man, getting furious because a right wing Baptist preacher got beat up. Why? Because the government, this one and the one before it and the one before it and the one before it and the one before it have no respect for the 4th Amendment.

When was the last time that the government respected the 4th Amendment? Was I even born yet?

3. You wouldn't violently provoke...
the border patrol like all of those xtian so-called leaders I've met would do. They just like to cause violence. You have nothing to worry about.

4. I can't say that I definitely would, because the one time it happened to me...
... I was much younger and I didn't know what was happening; Frankly, under the circumstances I was just glad to leave. Looking back upon it, I am furious that I was stopped, detained, and interrogated inside the United States in what I consider to be an unconstitutional act of government.

I thought that I had inadvertently crossed into Mexico and then back into Texas. Moreover, I was conditioned to accept this "inspection" because I had been through what I thought was a similar one at the Port Of Arizona.

If I lived near those interior checkpoints, I would like to think that I would stand up for my rights and oppose the checkpoints.

BTW- Are you saying that the guys at checkpointusa are also fundies? How does that figure into their calling?

The legal underpinning of this practice is slimy. If they can allow police to stop people at checkpoints 100 miles inside the US border, then there is no reason they could not do a house to house search as well, or have "immigration checkpoints" in Dayton Ohio. I'm also not buying that bullshit about the dog being a people dog. This is a warrantless search without probable cause anyway you look at it and it's prohibited by the Constitution no matter what the court has to say on the subject.

6. Tawana Brawley did more damage than she knows
I can't find a real news source for this preacher being beaten, so naturally I am given to wonder.

A friend of mine came home one night with a collection of wounds and property damage similar to what the preacher presents and describes. My friend told me he had simply been trying to leave a bar and he was attacked by juvenile delinquents. Well, before it was over he had told me the truth. He had been attacked, but it wasn't exactly unprovoked. His attacker cannot be excused for what he did, it's simply that it didn't happen the way that it was first told to me.

7. Reserving judgement for now
Edited on Fri Apr-17-09 01:06 AM by Peggesis1
I think it will be useful to see what evidence emerges before going further. If he pursues a law suit against the officers he has named and if the videotapes of that night support his claim, in other words, if his story holds up, then it doesn't matter if he is an obnoxious reactionary pastor. Equal protection under the law is for everyone, including people who hold his repugnant religious beliefs.

I'll wait to see what evidence turns up, though. Until then, I'll reserve judgement. (Yes, it's possible he is pulling something to make the federal officers in the Obama administration look like jackbooted thugs.)

Let's wait and see.

(Edited for spelling.)

11. Police brutality and illegal searches are not new
in many Black and Hispanic communities, it has been happening for decades. So it would be stupid to blame the Obama Admin.

Hopefully these officers will be held accountable for their actions.

15. Police brutality and illegal searches

"it would be stupid to blame the Obama Admin..."
Um, yeah. It would be stupid, but since when does that stop ultra-right-wing zealots from blaming Obama for whatever they want to blame him for? Remember the teabaggers dressed up his effigy as Hitler. And in this pastor's story, the police were the minorities. He read latino names on the officers' name badges.

I'm just saying that I advise caution before coming to conclusions here.

10. Wonder
Why he didn't show us his taser marks, since he was tased sooo many times. believe me, they leave marks.
What DPS exactley charged him with...he went jail, then to court, an affidavit was apparently filed.
Where was the boot print on his head, since the trooper was standing on his head. I've seen sandals leave marks on guys' faces, pretty sure a boot would leave a mark also.
Don't You Believe It.

13. I'd taze the fucker until the batteries ran out.....
Then I'd get more batteries!

The vids links you cite don't even begin to cover this asshole.

"Barack Obama ismelting like a snail." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcqXtACXUeY&feature=channel "....bloody murderer that he is." "Abomination."

He also has a lot of probs with the cops.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6reRAQLGRqI&feature=channel

Mouthy mutha... "Have you ever read the constitution?" "Don't you have to know the laws to be a policeman." Only a matter of time until some cops clean his clock for him.

I'll get all gushy about the cops beating the shit out of somebody because they were in the general area of a peace demonstration, but this guy is "baton bait."

Oh.... and he's a fundie asshole, too. I'll let the fundies defend this putz.

16. I felt bad for him at first,
but now I say he got what he deserved. That doesn't change the fact that those officers need severe punishment.

9. Refusing a verbal order is resisting.
Not to justify the response, but the place to argue his rights becomes a court room once the officer issues that order.

18. in the news
FWIW, this was posted on the AZ Family News website (http://www.azfamily.com/news/homepagetopstory/stories/phoenix-local-news-041609-pastor-beaten.e1057355.html)

"Mr. Anderson never filed a complaint with DPS concerning his arrest but instead made a You-Tube video that featured his version of the events of that day."

This makes me a bit suspicious about the pastor's allegations.
