And here is a link to an article that touches on the White House beehive that will be used to make their own honey, the garden will be year round with crop rotation, extra veggies will be donated to Miriam’s Kitchen, planting will be next month, etc.

1. you mean, no more tex-mex at the White House?
This First Family has brought class back, and I'm so happy. And Michelle Obama just oozes true caring and sincerity.

32. Please forgive
I meant no disrespect toward the former menu at the White House, only the former occupant.
Peace.

4. so delightful
OH, Michelle sure did not grow up a farmer, but she has heart. I love to see this. Thanks for posting the video. I sent a message to the WH yesterday with suggestions, especially to try warm honey straight from the hive when they can. What a joy to see our new First Lady in action... but, hey what's with no beets??

I love the message she is sending, good on her and the Prez.
Obviously strong believers in leading by example.

11. But whole idea is more to promote more healthy eating than to say they've taken up farming, which is
Edited on Fri Mar-20-09 06:44 PM by cooolandrew
a fine message. I heard on the raio an organic organization encouraged the Obama's to start a garden to encourage more healthy eating. It's great to see how much they listen and respond.

28. It is
too cold to plant tomatoes in D.C. right now.
You have to wait until the last frost.
I read in an article today that the White House garden will be 'year round' and there will be a rotation of crops.
There is a greenhouse on the top floor of the White House - I am sure they are getting the tomatoes ready up there where it is warm.

9. She's dressed entirely too well to be digging a garden,
but there's probably a law against a First Lady going outdoors in a t-shirt and jeans.

She's doing a great job. Just like her old man.

12. No kidding! When I go out to serious work in the yard or even
semi-serious work I promise that I'm not dressed like that. T-shirt and jeans would be dressed up for me. I find the most worn, often paint stained, crap that I can find, lol!

I'm loving what she's doing and involving kids in it. Warms my heart.

19. Black is an okay color if you're gardening. Besides Michelle was dressed for what
she WAS doing: meeting with visitors to the Peoples' house and enlisting those lucky kids in a brilliant gesture of health, self sufficiency, and leading by example.
Those kids will have good tales to tell their Friends in the future!
Michelle rocks!

14. Excellent! America needs victory gardens now
...to help us through the rough times until we can get this Nation up and running again.
Thank you to President and lovely First Lady and all of the Obama family and the White house staff for this important message to the people.
Yes we can grow our own food and eat better and help others. It makes me smile inside to see this.
I am doing my part this year with not only a family garden which we do every year but this year I am planting many more extra organic plant starts to give out to family and friends and maybe even have a plant yard sale later this spring.
Grow America grow!!!

16. Newspaper + a layer of mulch
All they had to do to take up the grass was put a layer of newspaper (preferably the Washington Post or the New York Times) down and a layer of mulch on top of it. Wait six months and voila - a layer of dirt - the newspaper + mulch kills the grass!!

Notwithstanding the lack of imagination to get the garden started, the intent is worth applauding...we need to start tackling America's (the fascination with fast-junk food] obesity problem from the grass roots.:applause:

22. Tomorrow
Tomorrow I am putting in my tomato plants, zucchini, cucumbers, pole beans, basil and other assorted herbs.
My lemon trees, orange, grapefruit are all blossoming and the bees are buzzing around -- and since we have been having some crazy weather here in Houston I already have a couple small figs on my fig trees! Last year my lemons grew as big as apples! Have three pineapple plants that I've grown from the cutting of store bought pineapples but I have never been able to get them to grow fruit ;(
Also have a few banana trees that are huge, but they also have not produced anything as of yet ;(

I grew up with my grandparents in Illinois and we always had a garden each year.
One of my most earliest childhood memories is of sitting amongst the strawberries with a bowl of sugar and eating them right off of the plants. We had an apple tree, pear tree, a grape arbor. Across the alley was a huge mulberry bush, two doors down my aunt had three humongous apricot trees, and across the street another aunt had a cherry tree orchard.

24. well...
obamaismyhero-

I am sorry that the tags are offensive - I did not look at those before I posted.
When I posted this video it was the only one on YouTube regarding Michelle Obama and the new garden.
I just now looked and it is still the only 'full version' of Michelle's remarks.
In my opinion, Michelle's remarks are more important to listen to than the OP's tags.

25. I think that I saw something like this on
Bill Moyers' show about this guy who suggested that the Obama's plant an organic foods garden near the White House. Matter of fact I think the video was posted on this website a while ago. If somebody has the link to that video please post it up.
