3. Very well-stated, Attorney General Holder. Now, let's see if we can have some rational
dialogue about this loaded topic.

A few years ago I worked with many black people. I'm white. I have believed in and supported equal rights for ALL Americans since I was a teenager in the 60's. On two occasions in the late 70's I had the opportunity to talk with some of my black co-workers about racial issues. This was in a social setting where everyone was seemingly very laid back. During the course of the discussions there arose points of disagreement between me and my black friends about my view or their view of how a situation involving race transpired or what the "problem" in the situation was. In both discussions the emotional reaction by my black friends to my views was so off-the-charts angry that I actually thought we were going to have a fight.

There was no rational discussion. It was all about their emotional response to my comments with which they disagreed.

So, learning that I could not express my opinions honestly and openly without being confronted as if I were a racist, I have ever since chosen to stay away from any discussions of race with black people.

To me this is a sad state of affairs. I'm very glad that Eric Holder has brought this up because it is important. But I'm not so sure it's going to be a kum bah yah moment for a lot of people.

5. Bertman, your views were so devoid of context, empathy and experience
that your "friends" could no longer relate to you. I feel confident in that "pronouncement" without knowing the particulars of your situation. How? Let's talk.

6. So, here I am making a general statement about some experiences I had and you
immediately assess that my views were so devoid of context, empathy and experience that my friends could no longer relate to me.

You must be a psychic. Wow.

You know nothing about me, nothing about the conversations we had, and nothing about the relationships, yet you jump to that conclusion. Simply amazing.

7. Your general statement contained a few clues

Why do YOU think they reacted badly to you? THAT is more important than any prognostication on my part. :pals:

I think we will agree on the substance of Eric's speech, I think he NAILS IT. I'm sincerely interested in where we might disagree after reading his complete remarks in context.

This will teach me to keep too many tabs open when posting. That was meant for a different post, a different poster and a different topic.
