http://www.kake.com/weather/headlines/7347256.html

based on a article byRL3AO

5-6-07 - The tornado that hit Greensburg has been rated as an EF-5 by the National Weather Service - the largest rating on the Enhanced Fujita Scale and the first in Kansas since the new scale was implemented.

The twister was 1.7 miles wide. A storm of this magnitude is the first in 8 years in the US - the last was May 3rd of 1999 in central Oklahoma. The Greensburg tornado was on the ground for 22 miles non-stop and 30 minutes. Maximum winds were estimated at 205 mph. This is the first fatal storm in southwest Kansas since 1967.

4. Kinda' looks like "If 'God' ain't pissed at us, . . .
something sure the hell is."

I just saw the Kansas weather forcast for the next week; nothing but rain and storms ALL week.

We used to say "In Kansas, if you don't like the weather, just wait a few hours; it'll change."

15. Just happened to read something yesterday about how the
Jet Stream is 'disconnected' meaning it's not one chain, but several. It was definitely disconnected when the tornado hit Kansas. When this happens, the weather in the US is freaky and strong. Here's the link:

streaking toward Moore, Okla. in 1999. I live about 7 miles South of the main hit. Not even a drop of rain here, but total destruction just that small distance to the North. Winds were clocked at 259 mph in that storm.

6. Ok I'm going to point out something News media deception
in the above article it says Greensburg Tornado was rated F5

Maximum winds 205 mph...thats not a F5 ..a F5 winds speed is 261-318 mph

they way the figure it out is looking at the material damage

F5 does this

Strong frame houses lifted off foundations and carried considerable distances to disintegrate; automobile sized missiles fly through the air in excess of 100 meters; trees debarked; steel re-inforced concrete structures badly damaged.

http://www.tornadoproject.com/fscale/fscale.htm

So that tornado to be a F5 had to have max winds of 216

why the deception?

9. No deception
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/faq/tornado/ef-scale.html

The Fujita scale was recalibrated on 1 Feb 2007.

Anything over 200 mph is now a F5.

11. In the video, it said one of the signs of global warming is an increase
in F5 tornadoes.

Listen, I absolutely believe in global warming, but I think we need to be careful about what we say if we're going to convince others to help solve this crisis.

We can't cry global warming after every single serious weather event, because some people are going accuse us of crying wolf and blow off the cause.

The previous F5 was reportedly in 1999.

I don't think two F-5's in eight years necessarily directly points to global warming.

It's tornado season and this happened in Kansas...in tornado alley!

If this had happened in California, then we'd have a story.

You know what I mean?

13. I agree
One weather event doesn't prove Global Warming is caused by man, just as one cold day or large snowstorm doesn't prove Global Warming doesn't exist. Over at the Drudge Report he constantly makes a big deal about big snowstorms and claims they are proof Global Warming doesn't exist. Obviously BS! Well, we shouldn't be guilty of the same kind of BS but in reverse.

Global Warming isn't about one single event; it's about an increased probability of events or a dramatic up-tick of a certain event.

14. Well all I can say is one of the symptoms of Global
warming is going to be more intense storms

Hopefully there won't be anymore F5 tornados and the freepers can all call me looney toons
and trying to scam them

I am convinced that Global Warming does exist and that F5 Tornados and Hail storms and Floods and Droughts and Cyclones are on the increase

But hey if I'm wrong this is one time I'll be very glad

26. Actually - some big snow storms ARE proof of global warming.
It turns out that annual snowfall rates in Syracuse New York rose steadily since around 1900. Paradoxically, the warmer the weather, the more snow because with more open water on Lake Ontario, storms coming over the lake pick up more moisture.

16. The Global Warming mantra is starting to sound like...
The progressive version of Armegeddon...

Everybody needs a boogie man. Just dont try and scare me. Fear is not an option.

I choose to not to be afraid of change. It happens. Fear is not constructive. To think that we can avoid the change at this point is silly. Man has continuously proven time and time again that we are incapable of proactively striving to do what is right and good en-masse.

Just My Opinion.

Be afraid or :toast: the change. You decide. Me? I am going to crack another one and toast the change and hope for a day when mankind or roachkind gets it right...;-)

20. Your right Global Warming really gets the Freepers
all in a tizzy... I have to  I love baiting them

because they all say its a scam and the world has had cycles like this over and over again

My one repub friend said The Dinosaurs went through this too

I made the point that the Dinosaurs went extinct

and Freeper friend just shook her head "you know what I mean its natural"

What really shuts them up is
And here is the BIG POINT
do you admit that the Antartic Artic and Glaciers all over the world is melting at tremendous rates

and since if you have been around say 100 years or 200 years 0r 300 years 0r 400 years oh what the hell lets say 1000 years

have they ever melted like this before???

last I heard the Artic was a rainforest was dinosaurs days...and ya know how long that was

that kinda makes them ponder but then they tell me again Its a Scam

24. I suppose so...
I would not know.

This is very important point here: -> My opinion is that the evidence of Global Warming can stand without the use of fear-mongering and that the use of fear mongering actually detracts from the argument, at least it does with ME. I apologize for not being succinct in my post. I will endeavor to remedy the problem.

As for Global Warming, trends are way up. Ice is melting. Hasn't happened before in my life time. PROBABLY due to the amount of shit humans are pumping into the atmosphere, and the fact that in the recent (last 5,000 years or so) there have been lots factors affecting the atmosphere, i.e. Man Made bombs, Volcanic Eruptions, Deforestation of vast areas to fuel the advance of civilization, Meteor Strikes, DEFORESTATION...oh wait I said that already.

The scrubbers (trees) are gone. Continued pumping of shit into the air is only quickening the pace of our the planets poor air quality which in turn relates to...well, everything. See this link for the amount of deforestation and some good insight. http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/tg/guide_frame.jsp?rd=LU&ds=1

The point I was trying to make: There is nothing we can do about it now, IMO (that does not mean to imply that it is ok to go out and chop down a tree and light up a cigar whilst driving your newly built OAK fired conveyance). Once GAIA shows signs of shrugging off the disease called man, we had better take cover - she will get what she wants. The lesson we humans need to take away from this is that if we are given a NEXT TIME, we had better be proactive.

As to your theory that Dinosaurs went extinct due to Global Warming. Some scientist actually believe that Dinosaurs never really went extinct, i.e. Birds...the earliest birds actually resemble small meat eating dinosaurs with the exception of their feathers.

That is why I crack another beer (actually tea...don't drink beer) and toast the coming of the new dawn. Lets hope whoever follows get it right next time. Personally, I think the Hopi Indians are dancing a jig and toasting the end of the stupid ones...I choose to join them in their toast.

l8r

I will grant that forest are recovering...the verdict is still out on whether or not they can recover fully.

25. No I didn't say the Dinosaurs went extinct due to Global Warming
I meant something in their environement changed and it wasn't a natural cycle and they went extinct
it was my freeper friend who brought it up

I think we can definitely stop Global Warming if we get started now

but the longer we delay the harder it gets

Al Gore said in Inconvenient Truth there will be increased wind velocities of hurricanes and tornadoes due to the heat energy warming the air... i don't want to scare anybody just putting out the theories of other scientists

they should be heard even if people don't like them

noone likes to hear bad news and the first instinct is shoot the messenger
Like I said I hope the theories is wrong and everything is going to be ok

27. I think the world has gone beyond theories...
Edited on Tue May-08-07 05:09 PM by saddlesore
The evidence is in the details. Over half the forest are gone. Those were the forest that sustained the earth for millenia. There was a lot of redundant scrubbing capability built into the system. Seemed to work well for natural events. We shall see how well it works with half a lung whilst smoking the dregs of our industrialized world.

To your statement that we can stop Global Warming. I only ask this, Can man stop a hurricane, or a Tornado? Much smaller affected area and region of influence than Global Warming. I do not know the answer, the question is rhetorical in nature.

I hope you are right and it can be stopped.

Keep putting them out.

p.s. As to the dinosaur mis-step, my apologies that was a GLARING FREUDIAN ERROR on my part. My point was that I tend to side with the scientist that say they never really went extinct, they just changed. After all, they lived for 65 million years and they changed a lot during that time, species came and went.

17. GLOBAL COOLING? ROMNEY SAYS NOT IN UTAH!!!
global warming is not a single cause-effect, and should not be related to each and every wind that blows....

on the other hand... telling me that god was pissed because kansas has been turning away from republicans isn't quite sane either

----- IS THERE SOME REASON THAT WE HAVE TO EITHER BELIEVE IN OR NOT-BELIEVE IN GLOBAL WARMING TO UNDERSTAND THAT POLLUTION IS...BAD ?
THAT ONLY THE TOP 1 PERCENT SHOULD BE FAVOR TAX CUTS FOR THE WEALTHY ? THAT WAR IS GENERALLY BAD AND GOING 0 FOR 1 IN PREEMPTIVE WARS IS VERRRRY BAD?

what happened in kansas is terrible and we should all be glad that they had enough duct tape and plastic sheets to be prepared for this storm.

What I'm trying to show is a EF5 Tornado when it hits is like Hiroshima bomb

and if you look at the bomb and a EF5 they have the same shape just the Nuke has fire with it

and EF5 is unbelievable force
