When the price of oil falls, the Alaskan economy turned sour ... some Alaskans felt that more drilling was the answer - and guess where they wanted to drill

1. If it's ANWR, that's nothing new.

I'm not sure why, but people running for officer here think it's political suicide to oppose ANWR drilling. I think mostly it has to do with job creation.

To hear Begich call for ANWR drilling. Go figure.

3. And obviously I meant "running for office," not running for officer.

Duh. As I said, it's just the holy grail up here. Politicians who even intimate that they might not be in favor of drilling (such as Diane Benson) get jammed up pretty hard about it. For good or ill, Alaska has an oil-based economy, so I guess it's inevitable, but personally I wish we'd just move on. Alaska has such potential for alternative energy - wind, tidal, geothermal, in particular. Oil seems so "20th Century" and regressive.
