But will she get it? Probably. I can think of many New York pols who do, like Carolyn Maloney, Carolyn McCarthy,& Kirsten Gillebrand. Gillebrand & Mc Carthy have won in tradionally republican districts to boot. Then there is Christine Quinn not only qualified but would be NY's first gay senator. Also qualified: Andrew Cuomo & Tom Suozzi.
I dont get the comparisons between Hillary & Caroline at all. Hillary actually practiced law. As a student at Yale she provided legal assistance to underprivileged and abused children at Yale-New Haven Hospital. She was a children’s advocate & staff attorney at the Children’s Defense Fund in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and also worked at the city legal services providing free assistance to poor residents. While in her 20's she was recruited to serve on the presidential impeachment inquiry staff for the House of Representative’s Judiciary Committee, investigating the Watergate Scandal. She was named one of the 100 most influential attorneys in America by the National Law Journal in 1988 and 1991. She has always been interested in health care for all. She also initiated the Children’s Health Insurance Program in 1997, & The Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997. She campaigned in all 62 counties of NY and won an election. Caroline would just be handed the positon.
Exactly what has Caroline done that is so extraordinary, I'm not sure. We know she skipped voting in primaries and general elections. I think she's intelligent and well educated, certainly no Sarah Palin. But I can think of so many other NY'ers like Maloney who took on credit card companies & McCarthy who took on the NRA, that really know the ins & outs of NY politics and since NY is the midst of a huge budget crisis, I would feel more comfortable with them.
And I'm not so sure the Kennedy name is a guaranteed "win", Caroline's cousin Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, was Lt Governor of Maryland. When she ran for Governor , even though Maryland traditionally votes Democratic and had not elected a Republican Governor in almost 40 years, Townsend lost the race to Republican Robert Ehrlich .
If Ted Kennedy is so anxious to see his niece as a Senator maybe he should resign his seat, let Caroline be appointed to it, stay on as her mentor & teach her the ropes.
Robert Kennedy was not a New Yorker, but I'm proud to say he was elected as Senator to serve my state.
