This video was posted in 2007, not sure of the exact date of his speech. It bothers me that he could not go beyond that to say that it should be between a woman and her doctor, that it is a decision best made by them.

Here are his views from 1997, so I would like to know a little more than that. There should be no question about jailing a woman for such a thing, but we have given in so much on that as Democrats that there may well be a problem with that soon.

NOW's alarm about the Daschle Anti-Abortion Bill from 1997

Daschle's so-called compromise bill, as quoted in the New York Times, permits an exception to the ban for `a severely debilitating disease or impairment specifically caused by the pregnancy (emphasis added),' but makes no provision for a pre-existing, life- and health-threatening `debilitating disease or impairment' that is being exacerbated by the pregnancy. This could include kidney disease, severe hypertension and some cancers. Nor does the Daschle bill allow for an abortion in cases of severe fetal abnormality where it is unlikely the fetus would live long outside the womb, even with technological support.

"The physician certification requirement and the potential loss of a medical license in the Daschle language invites government scrutiny of private medical matters and threatens doctor-patient confidentiality.

There is now even talk of doctors being jailed for two years if they perform a late term abortion using certain methods, a risk which could cost a woman's life while decisions are made in fear of losing an election.

I would like to know more about the women's rights stances of our new HHS Democratic head.
