MSNBC Countdown w/ KEITH OLBERMANN - Nov. 13, 2008: Keith Olbermann talks with Democratic strategist Chris Kofinis about the late breaking news that Hillary Clinton is being considered for the Secretary of state position in the Obama administration.

From the Washington Post: There's increasing chatter in political circles that the Obama camp is not overly happy with the usual suspects for secretary of state these days and that the field might be expanding somewhat beyond Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Gov. Bill Richardson (D-N.M.), Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) and maybe former Democratic senator Sam Nunn of Georgia. There's talk, indeed, that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) may now be under consideration for the post. Her office referred any questions to the Obama transition; Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor declined to comment.

And NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports: Two Obama advisers have told NBC News that Hillary Clinton is under consideration to be secretary of state. Would she be interested? Those who know Clinton say possibly. But her office says that any decisions about the transition are up to the president-elect and his team. Clinton was seen taking a flight to Chicago today, but an adviser says it was on personal business. It is unknown whether she had any meeting or conversation with Obama while there.

And according to CNN: One source close to Hillary Clinton tells CNN that as of early yesterday, Senator Clinton had not been contacted by the transition team about a possible cabinet appointment. This same source tells CNN that Senator Clinton would not necessarily dismiss such an offer. A spokesman for Hillary Clinton, Philippe Reines, tells CNN "Any speculation about cabinet or other administration appointments is really for President-Elect Obama's transition team to address." On Monday night, while walking into an awards ceremony in New York, Senator Clinton was asked if she would consider taking a post in the Obama administration. She replied, "I am happy being a Senator from New York, I love this state and this city. I am looking at the long list of things I have to catch up on and do. But I want to be a good partner and I want to do everything I can to make sure his agenda is going to be successful."

1. Hillary for Secretary of State? Hmmm!!! I rather kinda like that. What do you all think?
She's a tough lady. She'd take no prisoners. She'd have to leave her husband out of decisions, but he'd be a good ally if she were Sec of State. :-)

2. isn't it risky to take so many strong sitting Dem senators/reps out of their jobs?
I'm glad he's going for what he believes to be the top talent, but even in the event of Dem replacements (and I'm assuming all of these being considered are from states where their replacements would be Dems), those Dems probably won't be as strong as the incumbents they replaced.

So far they're replacing Obama, Biden, Emmanuel, possibly some other reps, and now Kerry or Clinton? Has this ever happened before?

7. They are mostly safe seats. Most states allow
Governors to appoint replacement Senators, e.g. NY, MA.

11. Hillary for SOS . . .
The Party worked very hard to gain seats in the Senate to enable this new Administration in the process of CHANGE. Quit draining this body for your cabinet, there are many qualified people in other vocations to draw from. Ex senators, ex reps, governors, just intelligent business people.

6. Lincoln did the same thing.
After getting elected he appointed his most formidable opponent from the primaries, Henry Seward, to Secretary of State. By taking advice and guidance from his opponent, yet still maintaining the final say in each decision, Lincoln formed intelligent strategies that won the Civil War and ended slavery. I say we let history repeat itself and give Hillary a cabinet position. It's worth risking some of our key Senators. We need the strongest people in this new administration when our road ahead is so bumpy and undefined. Hillary and Kerry can do so much more from the White House and if they make good on their goals we won't have to worry about their replacements.

8. Good Points
I still worry about moving too many from the Congress into the Administration, but things have a way of working themselves out.

9. Gesture / Trial Balloon
That is all I think this is.

A courtesy/gesture towards Senator Clinton.

I'm sure Obama (and Clinton) would rather Senator Clinton stay in the Senate to work with President Obama on health care.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the offer/decline protocol is already being discussed in private.

10. NO!
She doesn't have the diplomatic skill or experience for this position. I don't trust her. I would prefer Kerry or even Colin Powell. Hillary would be better suited to be health and human services. more in line with her experience and interests.

12. Wow, she must really hate being a Senator. What happened to Hillary and Universal Health Care?
