I'm hoping they also run that in Texas - just pull the Virginia-line and ye got yourself a winnning ad there too! That's some good ol southern Obama hospitality!

8. Did ya'll know who Ralph Stanley is?
I liked the ad but assumed he was just a farmer or Virginia local. For those like me who are clueless, if there is anyone, Ralph Stanley is a bluegrass artist and is in the Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor.

Is he highly respected in his community?

9. Ralph Stanley is one of the heroes of bluegrass
He and his brother had a band that kept the music going when it almost died out elsewhere. He's the genuine article in a world of wannbe's -- so with people who know him, all up and down through Bluegrass Country, he's got real clout.

10. For those who are clueless about bluegrass music
Stanley sang in the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" in which George Clooney starred. The song he sang was "Oh Death" and the song was supposedly sung in the film by the leader of the KKK at their rally. Of course the actor's singing voice was being dubbed with Stanley's rendition of the song.

11. Ah, just show the folks!
Please click here.

Ralph is the banjo player. He is ranked by no less an authority as Pete Seeger as one of the very best.

Carter Stanley lived life in the fast lane, having problems with alcohol and drugs. He died in 1966 at the age of 41.

12. I grew up with blue grass music
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 11:11 AM by rebel with a cause
My dad played in a Blue Grass band before I was born. Was on his way to Nashville when he got religion. Dang it.

Anyway, I rebelled against this kind of music because of my dad, normal kid stuff, but still liked it. The funny thing is now my daughter loves Blue Grass, plays the guitar and wants to maybe take up the banjo.

What is even funnier, I remember seeing that piece shown on the video when it was originally on tv. Oh my gosh.

14. Thanks for the link.
That's always been one of my favorite songs, although I grew up on the version The Kingston Trio did. My band still plays it today.
