Sarah Palin has a very distinctive way of speaking. Except when she doesn't.

5. In the less formal videos she was putting the "g" on the end
of words. I can change my accent at will, but it involves the sound of the vowels rather than keeping or dropping the final "g", which, to me, sounds a bit contrived.

16. When talking informally I can drop the final g's because that is natural
but when speaking with the more educated the final g comes back. It is called home speak and outside (formal) speak. palin's accent, on the other hand, does seem very much put on because her accent becomes more pronounced the more formal her speaking occasion is and that is not the usual.

2. Bush in a skirt ...

Of course, people who move in between cultures can often slip effortlessly in and out of a dialect and way of speaking. When in Rome ...

3. I resemble the disappearing accent syndrome.
I used to go spend a weekend with my British friend, and when I got home my family would comment on my accent. It does rub off.

I wonder who the Minnesotan is who's been coaching her?

19. You are a natural mimic. So am I.
I can speak with a Latino immigrant with a heavy accent and within an hour I am speaking broken English even though I don't really speak Spanish. I don't even notice it until I get called on it. The same with other accents. I have worked hard to not speak southern Illinoisan like I use to, but let me be around family or friends from here and I am soon saying fer instead of for, plural you is younse, and all the old sayings are back in my vocabulary. Uggh.

Yeah, for palin to speak the way she does, she would have to be around someone to pick it up from.

4. I heard a story on accents last week on public radio that said they can come and go.
Such as the newscaster from Texas who speaks with no accent until he is with other people from Texas. Or the British guy who lives here who has lost his accent until he is around his mom. Certainly, people may affect an accent, but it is not a perfect science.

6. That is true
As someone with a fairly good ear, I pick up on accents rather easily. However, in my experience, the main difference in the accents is in how the vowels are pronounced, not in keeping or dropping the final "g" in words.

7. She is lying to people.
There is a definate difference. This would be another good thing for the Media to cover. She is absolutely making up and exaggerating her accent.

10. I feel like I just watched the latest Eddie Murphy movie--worse
than the 29 before. At least Eddy is smart enough to know that he is making stink bombs. This lady just keeps on like she is on Idol.

18. What's more interesting
is that in the older videos she speaks in complete sentences that are mostly intelligible.

The McCain campaign has replaced her brain with Folgers Crystals to see if anyone would notice.

23. I've become partial to "Miss Piggy"
Concise, easy to remember, and fits her quasi-feminist attention-seeking archetype quite well. It is also the best visual example of "lipstick on a pig" that comes to mind.

24. That's a good one, but
"Cheney's Trainee" fits the shaping of a dictator-in-place that would carry forth anything of Cheney's design, it rhymes, and can be an effective chant at Palin rallys, or anywhere for that matter.

We want people to know that's what she represents, a furthering of the dictatorship of Cheney.
