We need Obama to take the pledge, too! So far, no response from his campaign. Democrats running for other offices have pledged. Want to help get more candidates to take the pledge? Go to Standing For Voters, or PM me.

Why is this a big deal? Do you remember Kerry conceding the election in 2004, when millions of votes were still uncounted in Ohio, the state whose 22 electoral votes decided the election? We need to keep that from happening this time.

Contrast Obama to Kerry on this issue: Kerry said he'd wait until all votes are counted. Obama isn't saying anything about the issue. In 2004 it was Green Party candidate David Cobb and Libertarian Party candidate Michael Badnarik who demanded (and raised funds for) a recount in Ohio. The recount turned out to be bogus because of the shenanigans of then-Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell.

The Democratic Party is far better equipped than were the Greens or Libertarians to challenge elections where it's necessary, and we can already tell there's reason not to trust the official election results. We need to get candidates, including Obama, on board now, preparing to challenge elections.

Standing For Voters is a tool to help candidates make a commitment to election integrity, and to give voters an opportunity to call on candidates to do so.

Candidates ask voters to stand for them. Help make sure the candidates hear our demand that they Stand For Voters!

1. We need this
And I have no idea why after 2 stolen elections this is not the Dems' first priority.

3. What do you think would be the best way to get DU to pressure O to sign?
There are so many of us here who care about election integrity, and who "get it." There are even more of us here who trust someone in that first category, so even if they haven't studied up on it yet, they'd take an action if it was a coordinated DU thing. What do you think is the best way to ask DU?

4. We already tried, sadly
We pushed HARD in 2006, and the Dems in Congress gave us that famous line about "More important work to do for the people of America."

Only a month to go, and I've heard Rove has been busy...do you know that at the time we were shouted down here on DU by people who wanted us to do "get out the vote" things instead of protecting the votes we had? 5 million+ votes flushed in 2004, and those people didn't want to do anything about it other than try and round up more people.

5. I know, and yet
I do think people are in general MUCH more aware of voter disenfranchisement and the problems with e-voting than they were even two years ago. Plus, this Standing For Voters pledge gives people a really easy way they can ask Obama to 'protect' the election, to the extent that's possible at this point. I can't give up yet. It's way too important.

17. Not only is she a nice lady
She is a bulldog for truth! That is what brought about the shenanigans of the 2002 election. TPTB could not have her researching their corruption.

After watching the half Dutch video she was a big part of (revealing things about the Carlyle Group they din't want the world to know), I knew they would not allow her into the House again. Btw, does anyone have that video or know how I can find it?

But she did get back in two years later. And I believe most people paying attention know how that went.

I :loveya: Cynthia McKinney!

19. I had not seen American Blackout yet
Thank you for the link. I'm glad that the Denise Majette episode was touched on. Did you know she only served one term in the House and that Cynthia won her seat back in 2006?

I think I've found it! IIRC, I watched it in 2002. It is very long and back then, being on dial up, it took me hours to d/l.

Exposed: The Carlyle Group

Cynthia appears at about 19 minutes. Through her research, she was exposing the Carlyle Group which, made the BFEE very unhappy. Hence the 2002 mid term nasty tricks to keep Cynthia out of Congress.

6. "Why do you think Obama wouldn't challenge an election?
His campaign has fought against ever accusation that's been made against him, and there have been MANY! Why do you think you hav eto insist that he sign some silly paper? Trust him and his campaign! I don't anticipate the election is going to be close enough to require a challenge, but if it does, there's no doubt in my mind that they will challenge it with full force!

7. The most important time to challenge is NOW, and his campaign is not doing it
Fighting attacks against him isn't the same as fighting attacks against US, the people of this nation.

If the massive attacks on democracy that are going on right now are not seriously addressed, by election day it may well be too late. We're talking millions of people who will not get to exercise their right to vote. Then on election day, approximately 95% of the votes will be counted by electronic voting machines running secret software such that even honest election officials will have no idea if the vote counts are accurate. And Karl Rove working for Faux "News," poised to call the election for McCain. We have all sorts of dirty tricks being set in place, including discrediting of the exit polls that are really the ONLY means of flagging corrupt elections where votes are cast on e-voting machines and there's no actual evidence of how the voters voted. So even if Obama DOES challenge the election AFTER it takes place, the only remedy at that point might be a repeat election. And how likely do you think that is?

So we need to get Obama's attention on this issue now. His campaign has, to my knowledge, filed ONE lawsuit regarding voter suppression. This is a start, but not a fast enough or strong enough start. The "silly piece of paper" is a way to waken his campaign to the need for attention to election integrity. And an easy way we can all tell him we expect no less. The elections rightly belong to the voters, not to the candidates.

Standing For Voters calls on candidates to take action NOW to protect the election, not just after the fact.

8. Gotta admire Cynthia McKinney....
... Even with a total MSM blackout, she's standing up loud 'n' proud for real Progressive principles.

No wonder the Greens are America's fastest growing party (I joined last year).

11. She was magnificent on the Mike Malloy show tonight
Brad Friedman of The BRAD BLOG was guest hosting. She came on and talked about election integrity. I suspect the archives will be posted at The BRAD BLOG tomorrow. McKinney was on in the second hour of the three-hour show, from about quarter after until the top of the hour. Definitely worth a listen. Not just by you, but by the Dems as well!

12. Well vinyl, this forum is for Democrats, and we're supposed to support Democrats.
Edited on Sat Oct-04-08 12:43 AM by petgoat
But frankly I think it's too bad if there's not a place here for people who
wish people like Cynthia and Cindy could be Democrats. We need their passion
and energy and dissent or this party is going down. Tweedledum/Tweedledee
politics doesn't cut it.

15. Well, even though I'm now a Green....
... I come to this forum every day to enjoy the whole spectrum of Progressive ideas.

Cynthia McKinney was a Democrat until a couple of years ago. She left the party after becoming disillusioned with its increasingly non-boat-rocking, pro-corporate, pro-war direction, and its lack of support for true Progressive principles.

Cindy Sheehan sees the rot at the top of the party and is doing a brilliant job in raising awareness about the sickening complicity of Nancy Pelosi and many others at the top of the DNC.

Of course, I always support the few Democrats who actually do their jobs: Kucinich, Boxer, Wexler, Feingold, et al.

But we desperately need a new popular people's party in this country. And that's why I joined the Greens.

Building a party up from the bottom is a lifetime's work, but look how far the Green movement has come in Europe over the past 30 years. We can do this here too, if we have the will.

So GO Progressives! (of all persuasions)

10. I came into activism on Election Integrity in 2004
Edited on Sat Oct-04-08 12:49 AM by petgoat
I noticed in 2004 when John Kerry acknowledged that 2 million black votes are
trashed in every presidential election (See Greg Palast, "The Best Democracy
Money Can Buy") and Kerry pledged to see that every vote was counted. His
premature capitulation in 2004 was a slap in the face to every black voter who
stood out in the rain.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?

Boxer and Clinton introduced a bill in 2003 to outlaw the electronic machines,
but neither one of them has been screaming bloody murder that the bill has been
sidetracked since then.

My own Democratic CongressCritter, when I asked her about the voting machines,
just invoked Congressional gridlock as if I was unreasonable and impractical
to think we might have honest elections.

FUCK THIS SHIT! I am sick and tired of being given the runaround by Quislings!
This is democracy! This is the Constitution! These are our rights by birth!
This is truth! Pelosi has got to go!
