On This Week, John McCain again lies about his campaign manager, Rick Davis, accepting payments from Freddie Mac.

McCain repeats his claim that Rick Davis has not accepted payments from Freddie Mac in two years when in fact, Davis' firm was being paid $15,000 per month, up until last month, August 2008, as reported by the NYT and Newsweek.

http://www.newsweek.com/id/161218

"Last week, though, McCain's trust in Davis was tested again amid disclosures that Freddie Mac, the troubled mortgage giant that was recently placed under federal conservatorship, paid his campaign manager's firm $15,000 a month between 2006 and August 2008. As the mortgage crisis has escalated, almost any association with Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae has become politically toxic. But the payments to Davis's firm, Davis Manafort, are especially problematic because he requested the consulting retainer in 2006—and then did barely any work for the fees, according to two sources familiar with the arrangement who asked not to be identified discussing Freddie Mac business. Aside from attending a few breakfasts and a political-action-committee meeting with Democratic strategist Paul Begala (another Freddie consultant), Davis did "zero" for the housing firm, one of the sources said. Freddie Mac also had no dealings with the lobbying firm beyond paying monthly invoices—but it agreed to the arrangement because of Davis's close relationship with McCain, the source said, which led top executives to conclude 'you couldn't say no.'"

1. McCain says none of his staff has received a dime from these companies FOR LOBBYING.
Is he splitting hairs here?

Did Davis & Co. receive money from these companies, but they just itemized it under a different name of a service that was not called "lobbying?" The service was essentially lobbying, but the McCain capaign gave it a different name so they can go on TV and deny it.

9. What is "lobbying"
Edited on Sun Sep-28-08 02:19 PM by MindMatter
If, technically speaking you have to be in a lobby tugging on a politician's lapel, then his statement may be legally correct. But any fool knows that companies give this money for a reason -- to get favors and influence. If lobbying happens around a meeting table or over a dinner, and not actually in a lobby, is it really "lobbying"?

Edited on Sun Sep-28-08 01:57 PM by Reform
ive been combing the net looking for hard figures for FY 2007 Appropriation Earmark totals, and have seen different figures for it.
I just need to know if Obamas figures were correct when he stated earmarks for last year were 18 billion dollars.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks

11. Earmarks answer- McCain wrong, Obama right
A good place to go is www.factcheck.org. Seems Obama was right on the money; acually, it's a little less. Here's copy from that site:

"McCain was way off the mark when he said that earmarks in federal appropriations bills had tripled in the last five years.

McCain: But the point is that – you see, I hear this all the time. "It's only $18
billion." Do you know that it's tripled in the last five years?

In fact, earmarks have actually gone down. According to Citizens Against Government Waste, there was $22.5 billion worth of earmark spending in 2003. By 2008, that figure had come down to $17.2 billion. That's a decrease of 24 percent."

7. And where were the questions about gambling?
The New York Times story is at this link (go to page 3 and after, in particular): http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/28/us/politics/28gambling-web.html

It wasn't only the Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae position pushers, but also the lobby efforts for Indian casinos, as well as going gambling in the very institutions which he oversees.

Way too limited an interview in my book ...
