The camera returned to Cafferty who merely stared into it for a few profound seconds and then said that that was one of the most pathetic things he has ever seen a politician say. He said if you aren't afraid that she is a 72 year old heartbeat from the presidency, you should be.

Then Wolf Blitzer tried to cover for Palin by saying that she was just trying to squeeze a lot into her answer. To which Cafferty replied:

"Don't make excuses for her. That was pathetic."

Cowed, but still deferential, Blitzer said it wasn't one of Palin's best moments.

Does anyone have an example of a one of Palin's best, unscripted moments?

This is more evidence for why it so important for McCain to loosen the chains on Palin and let her speak. Our nation's future is riding on this.

I understand that there was footage that was edited from this interview that was even worse than this. If this brainless twit had any decency at all, she would voluntarily step down.

And yet, I just saw (on MSNBC) some republican strategist saying that she is more articulate and knowledgable than Obama. Un-*ucking-believable....

8. THIS is the clip I wish was getting more media play, rather than the Alaska
one. This shows so painfully clearly, that she has absolutely no grasp of the situation or of our economy.

I'm surprised a handler didn't come in and physically yank her off the set -- probably in the corner hitting the bottle.

27. It's not gonna happen...
I'm telling you all they will not let it happen. They will make the calculated judgement that despite the hit they will take for canceling it, it will still be much less than the one they will take it they let her try to goo hear-to-head with Biden. As much as I'd love to watch it, I'll bet they never let it happen. On the other hand, it they do let her make a fool of herself on national TV (again), she will probably be off the ticket well before election day. She has become a huge liability no matter what they try to do with her. That's why they have this thing called a vetting process. Somebody shoulda told McPOW about it.

43. You are right! That's why McHouses was hoping that he could
get a pass with her debate - because of the economy. He was willing to take a pass on his FP
debate with hopes to get her out of hers.

The problem, don't ya think, is how he can dump her. I mean you can't invent a family illness.
If I were advising them - I would just have her be totally honest. "I am not ready. And,
this is just too much of a burden on my family." Take the hit, quickly. But the down
side here - is it makes McCain look like an idiot -- that he didn't know she wasn't ready.
For him though - he didn't pick her - his handlers did. They should fire whomever
forced him into it. Either way - McCain is fucked.

47. Since expectations have been set so low, all Sarah Palin has to do is
act all folksy and charming and she will be declared the winner of the debate. Americans are truly anti intellectual, they like the jock and the cheerleader. They don't like people who talk about policy and try to connect the dots. They want someone who doesn't make them feel stupid.

If Joe Biden so much as rolls his eyes at any of her answers he will be seen as a bully. After all while the media sees her as qualified having been governor of a state with a population of 650,000 they will then use that as an excuse for why she isn't as up on the facts as is Joe Biden.

He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. It's a no win situation next week in St Louis.

Hard telling what the Democratic handlers are telling Joe Biden.

I now eat crow. This woman is dumb! I knew it from the Gibson interview when she fumbled the Bush Doctrine question. She makes Bush look good. I mean dubya can make up a word on the fly if he has to, she can't seem to do that. The above is perfect.

This woman scared me into donating more money to Obama than i had budgeted. Which honestly was none, but she made me cough it up!

80. Sorry, women are only stupid if they think Palin was picked to get female vote
Palin was picked to get the far right evangelical vote, not the female vote. Palin is on the wrong side of every issue most women care about. Palin was picked to energize/mobilize the far right base that McCain could not. They don't care what Palin says or how badly, they are pumped. You cannot win a majority of voters by going to the far far right, but you can get close enough. Purged voting roles, missing voting machines, and exit polls that no longer work will take care of the difference -- just like in 2004. The Palin pick is a clear signal of their strategy. Unless stopped, the fix is in.

I noticed that she kept looking down at her lap. One problem is that the index cards only list talking points; they don't say which question they should be used for. The bigger problem is that Princess Palin doesn't realize that so she just cues her answer from the next card on the pile.

While this debate is going on about the bailout ,, Bush is
behind close doors pushing to send more of our jobs overseas
with the bill to give our jobs now to Latin America...

Bush and Cheney are like crabs , you watch their mouth and
they will bite you with their feet..

People are calling Bush dumb. But look at what he has
accomplish for Corporations and Foreign countries which have
been responsible for supporting him and helping him steal two
elections.
If the voters rights had been upheld , we would not have this
total destruction which the Bush / Cheney boys have created
with their illegal presidency..

From the start if our laws were upheld Bush and Cheney would
never have came to past.

But as Palin stated ,this is God's fault. For he told Bush
and the republicans what to do...

Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I wouldn't agree with him on much, but those are viable choices. Pawlenty or Mitt are viable choices. In choosing Palin, John McCain proved without a doubt that he has no moral compass and he is so reckless and irrational that his judgment cannot be trusted.

In many ways I feel sorry for Palin. My god. Small town mayor. Governor of a scarcely populated state. And being offered the VP slot for McCain (a "bona fide war hero")? I think she's realizing she's waaaay in over her head. She's trying like hell, but she knows she's not cutting it. McCain & Co should cut her some slack. She can always use the excuse she has a five month old Downs syndrome child who needs her. Of course, then who would McCain pick? Doesn't matter. Hopefully, that will be totally unnecessary.

45. That's why I think something is wrong with her personality and
awareness. She could have definitely said no. I would have. It's not about
lack of self confidence - it's about having a realistic view. If you
are a first year med student you say no when some says - here, perform
this heart transplant.

You also, as a woman and primary caregiver of young children (in most cases - that's reality)
you would also pause and say - wow - this would keep me away from them all the time.

48. I'm not a Hillary fan but people get on her for WANTING to be
president. I think that's what Sarah Palin wants as well. She has others take care of her kids so she has little to do at home. For all the talk we hear from the right wing about moms staying at home, it sure does seem most of them have nannies and don't stay at home, though they could easily live off one income.

Sarah Palin is as vicious as any woman who want to climb as far up any ladder. People like her stab anyone in the back if it help them advance.

I agree with ikojo. People like her DO stab anyone in the back to advance.
She did a good job at the RNC, but she had advance prep to practice - and a teleprompter.

This clip should be getting airplay - she IS throwing in unconnected talking phrases (because she can't grasp the points), and it's absolutely appalling.

If they actually don't come up with some "personal family" excuse to cancel the VP debate, I'll be shocked. I just can't see how they can put her out there like that.

what kind of thinking, what kind of person, what kind of mentality - causes this
type of communication difficulty.

It is totally chaotic. The thoughts are so dissassociated. There are no sentences.
There was no apparent comprehension of the question.

Think about how a normal communicator would react to a question they didn't know the
answer to. There would be a lot of "I'm not sure, but I think.."

65. I commented yesterday I kind of feel sorry for her
being so far over her head - she is drowning on a national stage and knows it - her life must be pretty miserable...

My wife cut me off with a resounding HELL NO! She said "She accepted it! To heck with vetting - SHE knew how unqualified she is and she was willing to say yes. She KNEW! She deserves every ounce of embarrassment and shame she gets!"

My wife is not necessarily a "typical" anything, but I do think her response is probably representative of many. She did not particularly care for Hillary, nor Obama. Like me, she supported Biden and after Iowa was pretty unenthusiastic about the choices and worried about the chances. Her reaction to this woman is visceral. It is a slap in the face to have picked her, and even more, it is a slap in the face for her to have the audacity to have said "sure thing John, I'll run wit ya!" I believe the reaction against her is even stronger BECAUSE she is a woman - resentment at her presumptuousness fueled by an instinctive competitiveness.

My mother-in-law supported Hillary, was pleased when mcnumbnuts picked barbie, defended her against the early criticism. She now is outspoken in her disgust.

Only two data points, to be sure, but I suspect that the "win the women's vote" strategy has backfired - big time. Unlike men, women are not tribal to the bitter end. Men will root for their team to their dying day. Women are more pragmatic; their survival instincts outweigh their loyalty to their "good buddy." Their instincts are better. Think about it. How many relationships end because the guy dumps the woman vs. the ones where the woman realizes she's got a loser and throws him overboard?

If Palin has five women (who have actually heard her) leaning mcmumbles way I'd be surprised. She's not just a detriment; he is a polar bear on a melting ice floe and she is an anchor tied around his neck.

104. ...I replied....
on another thread the same things your wife said. As a woman, she accepted the VP nomination. She's not running for the PTA. She should have known what she was stepping into. I do not feel sorry for her. She's had everything handed to her.

She is a total and utter embarrassment to women. She also knew that her family would be in the spotlight. She doesn't care. She's running her state in the ground. She doesn't care.

Yet every time women are placed in this position, we as women as supposed to be compassionate and care.

I do not care for her or her politics. If Hillary were on our ticket, no one would feel sorry for her.

I supported Hillary, but I fully supported Barack when he became our candidate.

QUIT feeling sorry for Palin, she's done this to herself. It's the last "Rovian" trick in the line of tricks.

Don't fall for it. Enough, Enough, Enough!

Ok - rant over

She is rambling about whatever, then she says "OOOH! Job creation! It's about creating jobs..." or whatever. You can hear her literally go "OOH!" As coached bit jumped into her little mind and she was soooo happy to seize on it, and extremely pleased with herself and her answer.

Pathetic, didn't answer the question and went for the pre-programmed bit.

81. Truly, truly pathetic. Can you imagine the shitstorm that is happening...
right now behind the scenes for McGrumpy's team? They must be absolutely terrified. I couldn't help feeling as I was watching McCain "suspend" his campaign that he looked like he had seen a ghost. This was right before the second Couric interview aired I believe. McCain's campaign, with his choice of Sarah Palin, is now akin to the Hindenburg disaster.

I think at this point as Eugene Robinson said on KO, "in for a dime, in for a dollar". Palin has to stay in. I'll have my popcorn ready like others on this board to watch what is sure to be a disaster. Biden doesn't have to do anything but state his own positions forcefully. Let Palin trip over herself attempting to string together nouns, pronouns, verbs etc. into any semblance of coherent thought.

Some people are feeling sympathetic for her; like she's this hapless patsy caught in the maelstrom of national politics, but sympathy doesn't enter the picture for me. They have with great relish painted Obama as naive and reckless. But the irony is that Palin's selection could not have been more naive and reckless. Palin must know how inexperienced she is yet during the Couric interview she has the nerve to wave her hand dismissively and derisively with that "Obama the Healer" claptrap. The consequences of a McCain/Palin administration are something I just can't even contemplate. So in the end she's learning a valuable lesson. Yes, this may destroy her career but I'd rather see her career go down in flames than have her potentially be the next POTUS.

89. Transcript of Q & A. "... this bail out is a part of that."
Q: "Why isn't it better to spend $700 billion dollars helping middle class families who are struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries, allow the to spend more and put more money into the economy instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?"

PALIN: "That's why I say, I, like every American I'm speaking with, we're ill about this position we have been put in were it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, um, helping the, aoh, it's got to be all about job creation too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track, so health care reform and reducing taxes and reigning in spending has go to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans, and trade, we have got to see trade as opportunity, no as a, a, not competitive, scary thing, but one in five jobs being created, a, in the trade sector today, we've got to look at that as more opportunity, all those things under the umbrella of job creation, this bail out is a part of that."

This isn't 'Stupid is as Stupid says,' but rather one of the major minions fronting foolish froth to further the fuhrer's future. Palin has fallen in lockstep with the orders she has been given. She just isn't very good at it, and had to recover from her heath care comment before ending her gaffishly stupid sentence.

95. Once she's moved into the White House its over
That is all they need. Keep the race close enough in the skewed polls with dishonest ads and red herring surprises to steal another election. I'd say they bump off the old man soon after, but it's remarkable how much he has prostrated himself and submitted to the old GOP guard on every issue, so he may stick around longer. But if he so much as hints at ACTUALLY reigning in lobbyists, or going after Wall Street he is toast. And then comes the coronation of President Palin (!!!)

I think there are those like Cheney and Rove and others that actually WANT Palin to squeeze in somehow. She is perfectly moldable, and she will learn on the job. Not the job of running the country but the job of reading prompters and learning her talking points to a higher degree, to a point where it comes out relaxed, confident and folksy and they will look back and laugh good-heartedly with the MSM pundits at how green she was back 'then'. They won't let her do many press conferences and when she speaks it will be only to friendly crowds. They have experience in how to keep their current puppetboy in a bubble so it shouldn't be too hard. And she will go along with anything they ask of her, because she will know that there is no way in hell (or heaven) that she could have ever achieved that position without them.

That is a nightmare scenario that I hope does not come to fruition.

102. You know what that answer reminds me of?
It reminds me of myself....when I was a teenager in high school...and my history teacher called on me to explain a chapter of a history book I was supposed to read the night before....but I didn't read it...because I was 15 and I decided to goof off with my friends and go to the arcade and play Arkanoid instead...and so even though I tried to slouch down at my school desk, my teacher - who could sniff out a slacker with the best of them - picked me on purpose. And I got up, and I started to freestyle...and I rambled on and on all over the place and I made no sense. And the other kids started to snicker and after thirty seconds or so of this, when the teacher figured he'd made his point to me, he finally told me to "just sit down".
