Hat tip to Ybor City Stogie for posting this.

The political pressure to grant Bosch a pardon was begun during the congressional campaign run by Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, herself a Cuban American, and overseen by her campaign manager Jeb Bush. The resultant pardon reputedly saw huge celebrations in Miami, in what was then called 'Free Orlando Day"

There is a wealth of information on this Bosch fellow through the years. Here is a brief background in an article from the The Guardian UK in 2002.

The Bush dynasty and the Cuban criminals

New book reveals links of two presidents and the governor of Florida with exiled hardliners.

Most controversially, at the request of Jeb, Mr Bush Sr intervened to release the convicted Cuban terrorist Orlando Bosch from prison and then granted him US residency. According to the justice department in George Bush Sr's administration, Bosch had participated in more than 30 terrorist acts. He was convicted of firing a rocket into a Polish ship which was on passage to Cuba. He was also implicated in the 1976 blowing-up of a Cubana plane flying to Havana from Venezuela in which all 73 civilians on board were killed.

CIA memorandums strongly suggest, according to Bardach's book, that Bosch was one of the conspirators, and quotes the then secretary of state, Henry Kissinger, as writing that the "US government had been planning to suggest Bosch's deportation before Cubana airlines crash took place for his suspected involvement in other terrorist acts and violation of his parole".

Bosch's release, often referred to in the US media as a pardon, was the result of pressure brought by hardline Cubans in Miami, with Jeb Bush serving as their point man. Bosch now lives in Miami and remains unrepentant about his militant activities, according to Bardach.

..."In July this year, Jeb Bush nominated Raoul Cantero, the grandson of Batista, as a Florida supreme court judge despite his lack of experience. Mr Cantero had previously represented Bosch and acted as his spokesman, once describing Bosch on Miami radio as a "great Cuban patriot".

Strange bedfellows.

We have a candidate running against her now who just became a Red to Blue candidate...thanks to the netroots nagging.

Clinton pardoned an accused tax cheat, but Poppy Bush set a serial terrorist free

By Eileen Smith March 1, 2001

In 1990, through the direct influence of President George Herbert Walker Bush, Orlando Boschfugitive from justice, undocumented alien, serial terrorist and airline bomberwas released from prison in Miami, at the urging of Bushs son Jeb on behalf of Miami Republicans.

Jeb (the family Florida fixer) traded the unusual release from federal custody for the votes of Floridians and delivered Florida to his fathers electoral tally in the 1992 presidential election.

Orlando Bosch was not released because he was rehabilitated and repentant. He was not released because he had served out a sentence. He was set free by the Bushes for Republican gain with seeming disregard for public safety here and abroad and for the Rule of Law.

Thirty countries had refused Bosch asylum because of his criminality. An acting attorney general in Miami and the INS had refused to allow him to remain in the U.S. In January 1989 the acting attorney general wrote: For 30 years Bosch has been resolute and unwavering in his advocacy of terrorist violence. . . . He has repeatedly expressed and demonstrated a willingness to cause indiscriminate injury and death. Attorney General Dick Thornburgh described Bosch as an unreformed terrorist.

And yet the Bushes set him free.

Even more troubling than the release of a dangerous man in exchange for votes is the manner of adjudication. President Bush did not pardon Bosch. He apparently simply stepped in and exerted the influence of his office to release Bosch against the recommendations of the district director of the INS and the Department of Justice.

This was no penny ante lawbreaker. Not just a tax cheat or draft dodger. Bosch planned, participated in, or managed the following crimes:

Heres the story on Bosch: A pediatrician by education, Bosch secretly left Cuba for Miami the year after Castro took power. He immediately began violent actions with the terrorist organization MIRR (Insurrectional Movement of Revolutionary Recuperation) and with the Movimiento Nacionalista Cubano (Cuban Nationalist Movement).

In 1968, Bosch was arrested by U.S. authorities, tried and sentenced to 10 years in prison. In 1972 he was released, and made his way without permission and against the provisions of his U.S. parole to Venezuela where he was arrested for the bombing of the Cubana airliner in which 73 people were killed, including the entire Cuban fencing team. He languished in prison there, while still directing terrorist actions detailed above. He eventually was freed on humanitarian grounds after a long hunger strike, and in 1988 returned to the U.S. without papers, where he was arrested for parole violation and then eventually remanded to the custody of INS (U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service).

Cuba asked for the return of Bosch so that he could be tried for terrorist actions, but Bosch petitioned for asylum in the U.S., stating that he would not receive a fair trial in Cuba (a la Marc Richs claim!). The petition for asylum is available at http://cuban-exile.com/doc_051 075/doc0055.htm

In January 1989, the request for asylum was denied. An acting deputy attorney general wrote: For 30 years Bosch has been resolute and unwavering in his advocacy of terrorist violence . . . He has repeatedly expressed and demonstrated a willingness to cause indiscriminate injury and death.

More than 30 countries refused to allow Bosch entry. The INS District Director in Miami excluded Bosch from remaining in the U.S. on the following grounds: * There is reason to believe he would seek to enter the United States solely, principally, or incidentally to engage in activities prejudicial to the public interest. (8 U.S.C. 1182 (a) (27)).

* That he is or has been an alien who advocates or teaches or has been a member of an organization that advocates or teaches the duty, necessity, or propriety of assaulting or killing officers of any organized government. (8 U.S.C. 1182 (a) (28) (F) (ii)).

* That he is or has been an alien who advocates or teaches or has been a member of an organization that advocates or teaches the unlawful damage, injury or destruction of property. (8 U.S.C. 1182 (a) (28) (F) (iii)).

* That he is or has been an alien who advocates or teaches or has been a member of an organization that advocates or teaches sabotage. (8 U.S.C. 1182 (a) (28) (F)(iv)).

* That there are reasonable grounds to believe that he probably would, after entry, engage in activities which would be prohibited by the laws of the United States relating to espionage, sabotage, public disorder, or in other activity subversive to the national interest. (8 U.S.C. 1182 (a) (29)).

In addition, the notice alleged that Bosch also is excludable on the grounds that he has been convicted of a crime of moral turpitude (other than a purely political offense), 8 U.S.C. 1182 (a) (9), and that he did not possess valid entry documents. 8U.S.C. 1182 (a) (20). See http://cuban-exile.com/doc_051 075/doc0054.htm

Then began the campaign to use political pressure to free Orlando Bosch and allow him to reside in America.

Jeb Bush, who had ingratiated himself with the highest orders of power in the anti-Castro communities of Florida, was the campaign manager for right-wing Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. Jeb arranged a meeting for her with his uncle, President G.H.W. Bush, to negotiate the release. (New York Times August 17, 1989)

In the same article the Times wrote Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the Republican who seeks the seat of the late Representative Claude Pepper and is the candidate for whom the president campaigned, wants the president to overrule the Justice Departments deportation order.

On July 18, 1990, Bosch was granted parole on the recommendation or order of George Herbert Walker Bush, and allowed to live under some temporary supervisory restrictions in Miami, although being allowed to walk the streets there and mingle with members of the community.

The circumstances of the parole dont exactly pass the smell test.

According to The Washington Post of August 18, 1990: In June, U.S. District Judge William Hoeveler asked government attorneys why nothing had yet happened on Boschs case. He gave them another month to find a suitable home country for Bosch, and on the eve of that court date, Bosch received the three-page offer for release into house arrest.

Justice Department spokesman Dan Eramian said the decision to release Bosch was made for humanitarian reasons, but that the government will continue to try to deport him.

That, of course, never happened. Hes still free. As is usually the case with the affairs of the Bushes, other Bosch trails lead to links with the CIA, the Mafia, and covert operations. There are claims that Bosch was a CIA operative. Theres even a tight connection to Frank Sturgis, the man thought to have killed President John Kennedy. Orlando Bosch was one of the Cuban nationals known to be traveling from Miami to Dallas with weapons on Nov. 2122. (http://www.aristotle.net/mstandridge/knollmen.htm ). Boschs name shows up in the report of the Warren Commission as one of those investigated in the Kennedy assassination.

In The Nation magazine in 1990, author David Corn wrote: In yet another parole violation Bosch is now, according to The Miami Herald, organizing a group to raise money to buy and ship arms to Castros foes in Cuba. Is anyone in U.S. intelligence watching his outfit today?

Obviously, George Herbert Walker Bushs need to be re-elected trumped any concerns for public safety and national security. Bottom line: This case makes the hysterical G.O.P. attention to the Clinton pardon of a fugitive tax cheat look like a political diversion. And it makes Bill Clinton look like Solomon the Wise and Judicious, compared to the apparent abysmal judgment and integrity of the Bushes.

And whenever you see the Bush clan purse their lips and speak haughtily of their patrician familial honor and tradition and integrity, remember Orlando Bosch. Talk about sleaze. 3. I should have noted that Bosch was not pardoned.
He was paroled. I know this for a fact because I requested from the DoJ a list of all the pardons that had been granted by GHW Bush. Bosch was not pardoned. He was paroled against the recommendation of the INS.

This wrong info is widespread on the Internet.

4. The INS recommended that he not be granted entry because he was a danger to the public.

But, most importantly, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen ran on the platform of "Free Orlando Bosch", and won.

How can an elected Congresswoman encourage assassinations?

FYI, the City of Miami has an official Orlando Bosch Day, and a street named after him. To some of the hard line exiles, Bosch is a hero.

None of this or the above posted documented terrorism committed by the numerous anti Castro exile groups stop repugs and Dems from pandering to these most extreme elements, and minority of the Cuban exile diaspora.

6. It's so good to see all three U.S. Presidents captured for posterity speaking with Mas Canosa!
Miami started breathing all over again when he finally, mercifully died and left the citizens alone after ruling over them with an iron fist, and a reign of terror. What a filthy, powerful little monster he was to be able to wield so much influence over THREE U.S. PRESIDENTS. He actually controlled U.S. policy not only toward Cuba, but also, in many cases, toward Latin America altogether.

Also equally bizarre was his belief that he should become the next President of Cuba. It flew in the face of reality, considering it was his vile collection of racist, imperious, violent monster cohorts the Cubans finally had to throw out of power with the Cuban revolution. They would NEVER be welcomed back. Impossible!

The insult he paid to the rest of the country flew out of a copy of the Spanish newspaper, El Pais, from an interview with Jorge Mas Canosa:
7/1/94 7/31/94 The Miami Herald reprints an interview with Jorge Mas Canosa from the Spanish newspaper El Pais. Mas Canosa was asked by El Pais whether he believed Americans would take over Cuba if Fidel Castro fell. The Herald quoted Mas Canosa as saying, in part, "They haven't even been able to take over Miami! If we have kicked them out of here, how could they possibly take over our own country?" (MH, 7/28/94; WP, 7/28/94)

5. So glad to see this video! The source Ann Louise Bardach was a New York Times journalist who
interviewed, along with Larry Rohter, Orlando Bosch's cohort, bomber/mass murderer, Iran Contra operative, CIA agent, Luis Posada Carriles. Their series, "A Bomber's Tale," on Posada Carriles was published world-wide.

She has been back and forth to Cuba countless times researching her writing.

Thanks, so much, madfloridian, for sharing the video clip, for breaking the news on the new book. Abolutely essential reading. I've got to get it A.S.A.P.

The book is desperately needed. People need to know throughout the country the degree to which this grotesque family has been immersed, entertwined with these mega criminals. There is nothing approaching their level of criminality in this country.

Thanks, also, for the inclusion of acts of terrorism against Cuba and Cubans. This thread would be an excellent reference for future posts on other threads!

7. The Guardian article is from 2002
So the book must have been new then. I have not really kept up with this topic as you have....I did not realize all this about him. It is amazing they have a day in his honor. I bet the book can be found online, though.

8. Here it is! I remember, now, when it came out. There were rumors about the book being published
even directly after the Elin Gonzalez drama, in Miami. At that time Ann Louise Bardach started making her many trips back and forth to Havana doing interviews with the friends, relatives, neighbors of everyone who was on that raft, and getting the history of the people who died, as well as interviewing the Miami relatives of them all.

Two people survived that trip, along with Elin, who had been separated by the tide from the kid, and they arrived separately, and were played down in the media as apparently they weren't as interesting, and as newsworthy! Also, they were a biracial couple, arriving in an area filled with abnormally racist, Batista era-connected oligarchic "exiles."

People in South Florida were agitated waiting for this book, and another which was written by a Cuban "exile" banker who supports dialogue with Cuba, who has had his bank bombed by Cuban "exile" hardliners, also coming out at the same time.

Since my "contacts" to Miami disappeared when the CNN message board I used shut down, I never got a chance to find out how these two books went over after they came out, but I know people were over-wrought waiting for their publication!

Here's Ann Louise Bardach's book, available now for a song at Amazon:
