Obama in Columbus, Ohio:

I've known Tim Russert since I first spoke at the convention in 2004. He's somebody who, over time, I came to consider not only a journalist but a friend. There wasn't a better interviewer in TV, not a more thoughtful analyst of our politics, and he was also one of the finest men I knew. Somebody who cared about America, cared about the issues, cared about family. I am grief-stricken with the loss and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family. And I hope that, even though Tim is irreplaceable, that the standard that he set in his professional life and his family life are standards that we all carry with us in our own lives.

1. That was a wonderful tribute to Tim R

Finally we'll have a President that can speak the English language and is compassionate.

It seemed so sincere and from the heart.

"One of the finest men I knew."

2. I thought his statement was touching and real --
and that it was a prepared statement.

Now that I see it was an extemporaneous response to reporters, I'm even more impressed.

4. gateley, my friend, how we think alike!
I was reading the typed text, and then I see that it was his unprepared statements, I'm so touched, what a blessing it will be, as the first commenter said, to have a president that can speak the language with such prose, and compassion.

11. I'd forgotten that they make politicans who are as intelligent as Mr. Obama.
I mean, really, he's literally on a tarmac, just off the plane. The wind, sweeping his words away almost to the point of not being able to understand him. But what words...eloquence even in an unplanned, unexpected event.
