Most of the RW talk shows control who speak on the program so that it gives the listeners the impression that everyone's OK with the host's point of view. Rarely do you hear them allow a dissenting opinion reach the airwaves.

My guess is that this person had never been on the business end of his own tactics, and if he has any introspection, the question "is this journalism" might actually make it into his system.

If this approach was used outside of the above context I think I would be more turned off by it.

It seems to me that we may be reaching a similar point. In the case of McCarthy, it was one bully who had a bully pulpit in Congress. The corporations backed him because they saw that as the safe place to be. I'm not really tuned into how that changed, but I surmise there came a time when McCarthy was discredited and the corporations no longer saw safety in being behind him.
