And... they are off. They are picking up where they left off in 2004. :puke:

From the National Campaign Fund, a conservative 527 group. The creator of this ad is the same person behind the Willie Horton ads back in 1988, Floyd Brown.

Edited on Mon Apr-21-08 09:53 PM by Trajan
It is completely fallacious .... He had a number of valid reasons to reject that legislation.

I agree that our candidates MUST respond and respond hard ... none of that wishy washy weak-knee'd Kerry non-responses will do.

16. I said it's powerful -- yes, strong. It will get the message they want to
get across to those who will buy into it. I didn't say it was right or wrong. It was an objective observation on my part of how I think the message will be received, that's all. :eyes:

19. 527s are like the antonym of logic.
They don't need to be correct, just emotional.

That was my point.

We're still talking about Harry and Louise.

21. Willie Horton
The guy that put together the Willie Horton commercial in 1988 is the one that put this together. In 1988 Lee Atwater used one of the points that Al Gore brought out during one of the democratic debates about Willie Horton, and hired this guy to put a commercial out. Remember it was all grainy like and at the end it had a mug shot of Willie Horton. It used racial fears as a focus point. two things to remember: 1) The republicans are going through videos of the democratic debates with a fine toothed comb trying to get stuff like this. 2.) Yes we have come a long way in the U.S. as far as race relations are concerned, but the republicans still will use those old racial fears and prejudices as a campaign strategy when the general election campaign gets under way.

6. He voted against expanding the death penalty in Illinois? That's my man!
i detest capitol punishment.

recall, too, that Illinois' governor called a halt to the death penalty in that state after .... (can't remember the number..) umpteen inmates were freed from death row on the basis of DNA evidence.

Good for Obama!!!

9. hmm
Death penalty isn't as strong as it used to be in the cultural sense this time due to the fact of all of the people on death row who have been exonerated through either DNA or other testimony. Except for those in media caves. And we know who those will vote for in the most part.

Overall the add was weak focusing mostly on gang violence, because where most of the swing voters are and that they don't experience it that much this won't hit them has hard as repukes want. Those who do deal with this type of violence seem more interested in voting for Obama because they can see he wants to help lessen the economic and social situations that lead to it's conception.

10. Hard to extend a failed, broken system
On January 31, 2000, Illinois Gov. George H. Ryan declared a moratorium on all state executions until a commission could recommend changes in the application of capital punishment, which it did in April 2002. Three years later, on January 11, 2003, just before leaving office, Gov. Ryan took an even more dramatic move, commuting all Illinois death sentences to prison terms of life or less.

"Our systemic case-by-case review has found more cases of innocent men wrongfully sentenced to death row. Because our three-year study has found only more questions about the fairness of sentencing; because of the spectacular failure to reform the system; because we have seen justice delayed for countless death row inmates with potentially meritorious claims; because the Illinois death penalty system is arbitrary and capricious – and therefore immoral – I no longer shall tinker with the machinery of death," Gov. Ryan said, quoting at the end Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun, who wrote in 1994 to explain why he would no longer support the death penalty.

11. Thank you for this information
We know this is coming, so what do we do about it?

We could remind the makers of the add that voting for the death penalty does not equate to getting results on crime or otherwise being effective, even on the war on terror. After all, Mr. Bush, who completely botched the war on terror, executed over 150 condemned inmates in Texas.

14. Won't be effective
Seems like this add is trying to appeal to people that are not very bright, and very bloodthirsty. They wouldn't have voted for Obama to begin with. This will not sway the good, and kind hearted people of Obama's base. It may excite the ghouls, and vampires that don't like Obama, but who cares, they are just preaching to the chior....Let them keep wasting their money on childish adds!!!! -MOST- of the American people are way too smart for these tactics...Think about it. Can you imagine even one person at an Obama rally that would drop their support for Obama after seeing this immature, poorly produced, little skit? It just reflects their desperation.

17. Warning to Networks: Air this crap at your own peril
I haven't watched a minute of ABC since they aired "Path to 9/11" and will gladly take the same approach with anyone who airs irresponsible 527 ads.

If that means not watching television anymore, I can live with that.

Call me slow, but today I read an article that said that ESPN is owned by Disney. The same Disney that owns ABC. Goodbye sports center, and anything else on ESPN....I think they also own some movie studios, I just don't know which movie studios they own...But, since I don't go to, watch, or rent movies.....I don't care too much about that...I do want to check out the new movie called, "Body of War" though....

27. This ad is totally hilarious!
It is such a blatant blast of hot air, I dare them to run it in the general. Obama can fend this stuff off easily.

The problem if there is one is that it is coming now in the primary while Hillary has him pinned downed.

Now you know what the funny thing is about this video, right?

Newsmax is the media outlet pushing it on the internet.

Newsmax was founded by Christopher Ruddy.

Christopher Ruddy is the top reporter for all the Vince Foster, etc. smears funded by Richard Mellon Scaife.

Richard Mellon Scaife and the Clintons have recently had a rapprochement.

I'd love to know if this 527 has any ties to Scaife.

32. True that, but look how tough it has been for the Clintons
Not just wealthy donors needed, but they have to have the will to spend. If there's a sense that they're just pouring good money after bad, they'll defect pretty quickly. I suspect McCain will learn soon enough that there's nothing quite as fleeting as a political "friendship" :)

34. Well, Hillary Clinton's fundraising needs to abide by campaign finance rules.
Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 11:35 AM by NJSecularist
There are limits to what individual donors can contribute. $2300 in the primary, $2300 in the general for a total of $4600. Also, she has limits to how she can self-finance her own campaign. I believe the limit is $350,000.

When talking about 527s, there are no such contribution limits. Wealthy donors can donate as much as they want, with no FEC regulation.

35. I am aware of the 527s and the differences in FEC regulation
Donors "may" donate as much as they "want," the limitation is in the "want." As the pro-Clinton 527, recently learned after having to scale back its fundraising goal three times and quite significantly. Having only collected $450,000 from a goal of $15 million and after asking for $100,000 from each donor only to learn there was little "will" or "want" was hard news to get particularly as you're starting the fight of your life in the state of your life. In essence, in the 527 world "running out of money" means not getting more.

And as I said in the initial post, I sure hope McCain's team keeps putting out crap so that hopefully his campaign will run out of money (e.g., no more "want" from big money donors).
