6. If I may hazard a guess . . .
Jackson's definition of racist is similar to the definition some here have of misogynist: somebody with the good judgment to oppose the Iraq War and vote against the Kyl-Lieberman resolution and who believes he would make a better president than someone, specifically a certain lady who shall remain nameless, who has failed to show such good judgment.

That is one stupid definition of racism. Try a dictionary instead of the chip on your shoulder.

Obama is crashing in today's Rasmussen poll and the speech did not help. I though you would like to know.

Ah heck, here is mine:

Webster's Online:

1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

2 : racial prejudice or discrimination

Anybody who gets more than that out of it is reaching and you know they're a MCClinton supporter.

Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 09:14 PM by kirby
All you have to do is watch his 'A More Perfect Union' speech from the other day and you can plainly see he is quoting something he said in that speech. Here is the part and the context is 'should he disown Rev Wright completely'?

"He contains within him the contradictions — the good and the bad — of the community that he has served diligently for so many years.

I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can disown my white grandmother, a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed her by on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.

These people are a part of me. And they are part of America, this country that I love. "

63. reverse racism is a rubbish term
racism is racism

to imply that racism by blacks is 'reverse racism' implies a lot about what the user of that term thinks

racism is wrong, it's scientifically unsupported, it's immoral. but no kind of racism is "reverse". it's just racism.

if you treat people differently based on their race- that's a racist act

if you think some people are better than others because of their race - that's a racist belief.

"reverse" doesn't come into it

19. Sigh
This is exactly what faux news was waiting for when Mr. Obama decide to talk about race. Any statement adding a generalization to a group of people so they could exploit it.

You don't see them going after McCain for commenting that most americans see their doctor frequently. Barack's statement held more truth than that one. Now this isn't true for everyone, but I can bet most of those who are spewing this comment as racism get those feelings.

It's probably something similar to the fact homophobe's are actually attracted to men.

Faux News took a snippet - implying that it was from a separate source - and played it without any context.

Granted, the term "typical white person" was an inelegant phrase, but where's the animus? I'm a typical white person. It doesn't register with me as racist because being a "typical white person" doesn't always start with racist assumptions, and it certainly didn't in this case. Faux is running with this meme because it riles up the idiots who drool before Murdoch's glowing propaganda box.

" I'm a typical white person. It doesn't register with me as racist because being a "typical white person" doesn't always start with racist assumptions, and it certainly didn't in this case"

it's crap.

tell me what the attributes of a "typical white person" are

also, a typical black person, and typical asian person.

i'd be fascinated to know

apart from melanin concentration, and other rather meaningless physiological traits, what are the attributes of a "typical person" of a given race.

i don't think there are typical beliefs or traits of people that can be distinguished via race (except for very narrow physiological stuff like susceptibility to certain diseases (sickle cell anemia), etc. and we know that's now what we are talking about.

thinking that there ARE certain attributes of a person based on their race is more than inelegant.

and i say this as an obama supporter. i am not a huge fan by any stretch, but he's certainly a better choice than hillary.

Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 09:20 PM by Spiffarino
Let me put this into perspective...

I must then assume that, by calling yourself "jackson_dem," you are a big believer in Jackson's Indian Removal policy, which eventually led to the deportation of the Eastern Cherokee over the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma. Over 4,000 Cherokee died of disease, thirst and exhaustion and most were women, children and old people.

As a General, he also prevented runaway slaves from using Florida as a safe haven, causing the torture and death of many slaves. However, it did make life a lot better for wealthy southern planters. You must love that one, eh?

No, I doubt that you do. Just like I doubt that Obama has any serious problems with racism.

I get a little nervous when passing a young black man on an empty street in a major city too. I know it's silly. Same way I get a little nervous that my plane might crash on landing. I wouldn't think a white person who uses racial epithets casually or is afraid of young black men is terribly out of the ordinary. I know many white people, including some dear friends, who feel that way. In fact, I would call such behavior and fears "typical." People who think otherwise need to get out more. So slap me down, too, if you want to slap down Senator Obama.

There is nothing racist about that comment. Regardless of what some have said on this post, this is right wing spin from a major polluting source of the right wing noise factory, being passed on to supposed liberals by supposed Democrats for their own purposes. Any one, especially any one white, who doesn't recognize commonly held prejudices and fears that Senator Obama is describing needs to take a good look at himself in the mirror.
