The AFL-CIO says the budget blueprint report making job creation and long-term investments the cornerstones of a sustainable federal budget - released Monday by the Economic Policy Institute, The Century Foundation and Demos - is a starting point for the debate over budgeting for broadly shared prosperity. AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka says it rejects the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and attacks on Social Security and Medicare. EPI Policy Director John Irons says the plan puts jobs and economic growth as the top priorities. It includes substantial and sustained increased job creation funding while putting Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid on solid footing. The Economic Policy Institute says it’s fiscally irresponsible not to adequately invest for sustainability in these programs and in the federal budget generally. And the economic think tank says it strongly opposes cutting socil insurance programs like Social Security and Medicare that have brought security and prosperity to millions of Americans. The government deficit commission is set to release its final report Wednesday.
