UNITE-HERE hotel workers in Toronto are on the picket line as the G-20 economic conference gets underway there. Union spokesperson J.J. Fueser says the picket line at the Novatel Toronto Center went up just outside the main security cordon of the G-20.

: “We want to make sure that hotel workers in Toronto can expect certain minimum standards no matter where they work. So we understand between a luxury multi-national hotel and a mom and pop owner there may be some variation in wages. But we should still see common standards in terms of room attendant workload, in terms of a move towards fulltime stable jobs, real protections for workers who get injured on the job, full health care coverage and a decent pension.”

(UNITE-HERE bargaining is underway at 32 hotels in Toronto.)
