http://www.laborradio.org/node/11823In an attempt to cut expenses the postal service is asking workers to resign or retire. Jesse Russell reports:
In an effort to cut costs the United States Postal Service is seeking to buyout as many as 30,000 employees. The offer is being made mostly to workers at mail-processing facilities after an incentive package was drafted following negotiations with unions representing the workers. Those that take the incentive will receive $10,000 in the first fiscal quarter of 2010 and $5000 in the first fiscal quarter of 2011. The postal service is seeking ways to slash $6 billion in expenses and the incentive package could save an estimated $500 million. Letter carriers aren’t included in the incentive package because even though mail volume has dropped 14.3 percent in the last year the number of addresses in the United States increases by 1.5 million every year.
