President Barack Obama will bring his campaign for health care reform to the Cincinnati AFL-CIO’s annual Labor Day picnic at Coney Island, the White House announced Monday.
It will be the president’s first visit to Cincinnati since taking office, and his first since the Sunday before last fall’s election, when he drew about 27,000 to Nippert Stadium on the University of Cincinnati campus for a rally.
“AFL-CIO’s Labor Day picnic is probably the largest Labor Day picnic in the country … It’s a great crowd,” said Tim Burke, chairman of the Hamilton County Democratic Party. “It’s a part of (Obama’s) base that supported his candidacy and they need to be rallied to be on board with the Obama health plan.”
Burke said he’s looking forward to hearing Obama answer questions about health care and hopes he will comment more on what has been accomplished by the Obama administration.
“It’s important that Obama continue to do what he’s been doing in recent trips, dispelling some of the outright lies people are putting out there (about health care),” Burke said. “He’s been to Columbus and Cleveland – it’s time for him to be here, now.”
Hamilton County Republican Party Chairman Alex Triantafilou was not surprised by the announcement.
