By a three-vote margin, Bullitt County bus drivers and other school transportation employees agreed yesterday to join a union, saying they wanted to help secure better pay and working conditions.
But the Bullitt County Board of Education hasn't said whether it will recognize a union.
The 115 employees of the Bullitt County Transportation Department voted 57-54 to be represented by a union. A few did not vote.
"We want to get these kids home, but we want to be treated fairly," said bus driver Ed Olesdy.
Last fall, a group of bus drivers approached the school board about being represented by Teamsters Local 783, the same union that represents 1,500 transportation, security guards and maintenance employees in Jefferson County Public Schools.
Last month the board asked the state Department of Labor to conduct a vote by the transportation department employees to see whether the majority were in favor of joining a union.
