OSHA cites CA carwashes

LOS ANGELES — Two carwashes here, which have made the news before, have now been cited by the Cal/OSHA department for health and safety violations, according to OSHA News.

The Dec. 24 report said Vermont Carwash and Hollywood Carwash have been issued $25,085 in citations after complaints were filed by employees.

Cal/OSHA Chief Len Welsh said in the report, “Carwashes and other operations using energized machinery and hazardous chemicals have specific requirements they must meet to control exposure and prevent accidents. Serious injuries or even fatal accidents can be caused by this kind of work if employers fail to protect employees from the types of hazards we found.”

Violations listed in the citation for the Vermont Carwash include:

· Exposed moving parts on the belt and pulley of a washing machine

· Unguarded gears and sprockets on the car conveyor line



Violations listed in the citation for the Hollywood Carwash include:

· Exposed moving parts on the shaft of the Cat pump, used for application of liquid materials

· unguarded pulley of automatic water pressure pump



And a lack of emergency eyewash and shower equipment was cited for both locations.
