Appleton workers file unfair labor charges

POSTED: April 19, 2008

ROARING SPRING — Union workers at the Appleton Spring Mill Friday filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board against the company for illegally implementing the terms and conditions of the company’s ‘‘last, best and final’’ contract offer on members of United Steelworkers Local 10-0422.

The company last week declared an impasse in the labor negotiations, a move that it claimed allowed it to implement the terms and conditions of its latest offer Monday.

Union members disagreed that an impasse was reached and filed the unfair labor practice charges.

Appleton spokesman Bill Van Den Brandt said the company has bargained in good faith throughout the negotiations but that the point had been reached where the negotiations deadlocked with no meaningful progress in sight.

“We believe their claim has no merit, and we expect it to be dismissed,” he said.

Union members remain on the job.
