1. I found this on about.com:
http://parentingteens.about.com/cs/marijuana/a/420meaning.htm

The Origin Revealed
According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation. While our teens feel that they know something we don't, you can let them in on the fact that it was your generation that came up with the numbers.

A quote from one of the Waldos in the High Times article states, "We did discover we could talk about getting high in front of our parents without them knowing by using the phrase 420." Fortunately, your teenagers will not have that same option.

11. Thanks, that's similar to one of the theories they talked about on NPR...
...last night, on "All Things Considered" <http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5351807>

And, I don't know if there is any connection but, last night on "South Park" they brought back "Towelly" the Pot-smoking towel (getting High makes him smarter)!

In brief, he was working as a waiter at a P.F. Chang's, got fired for being stoned, then they went on to rip on Oprah Winfrey and the James Fry fiasco. Not weird enough, the show featured her talking Nuge (vagina) and her "Gary" (talking a-hole). It was very over the top, as usual.

7. 1992: I used to play in "The 420 Band"
We got the 420 thing from little flyer a kid was passing out at a Dead show in Oakland - around 1988...

This was at Penn State...I think, later, there was another 420 Band from Ohio...

But back then - nobody knew what it meant - we had to explain it to everybody...

We didnt invent it - but we always thought some of the popularity of that term was our fault...

10. Getting old sucks
Aspirin is my drug of choice these days, but there's probably a residual effect that still lingers from my 20s...
