because by the time they hit middle age they won't be able to do the jobs that require good backs. Perhaps McCain's off hand remark is right on the money.

There have been advances in recent years on less back-breaking harvesting techniques for other crops. Perhaps someone will find away to minimize the stoop harvesting method used on crops like lettuce.

11. It is parallel to the justification for athletes' salaries
come to think of it. The low pay can only be justified on a worker supply basis and if there will alwats be workers available to take your place in the row when your back gives out, there's little incentive to pay you more money, unless of course you have a union or laws that dictate better behavior on the part of employers.

He probably thinks that all kinds of people make $50/hr. He obviously has no idea how hard it is to find a job that pays just enough to get by.
