What Game Were They At? 'Wash Post' Deaf to Boos for Cheney

NEW YORK The veteran Associated Press reporter Terence Hunt heard them. Reuters heard them. In fact, virtually every press account of opening day for the Washington Nationals baseball team at RFK Stadium this afternoon mentioned that when Vice President Dick Cheney was introduced to throw out the first pitch he was loudly booed or at the minimum received more jeers than cheers. A video of the event proves it.

But here's how David Nakumura of the hometown Washington Post described it:

"The first pitch of the Washington Nationals' second season at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium was low and away, bouncing in the dirt before being scooped up by catcher Brian Schneider.

"For that, Vice President Cheney received a round of boos from the home crowd this afternoon. But the catcalls didn't last long before the fans cheered for the Nationals, who took the field in their white uniforms with red trim against the New York Mets."

No one else suggested that it was the quality of the pitch that set off the booing.

AP: "Greeted with loud boos and some cheers, Vice President Dick Cheney threw out the ceremonial first pitch Tuesday at the Washington Nationals' home opener. "

It doesn't look to me like he said anything about Cheney getting any cheers.

Good point.

On Edit: Its obvious to anyone who watches the video that the boo's came well before he threw the ball. The video I watched began right after Cheney was announced(I assume). And the boo's had already started when it began.

5. I sent an email

Dear Ombudsman (re: Cheney's popularity pitch)

The man's popularity percent is at nineteen. Do you really believe it was his pitch that was booed? More importantly, do you really think we believe that? The post description of events is telling. Why not just tell it like it was? Maybe you should view the video like the rest of us have, really.

6. It sort of implies that the boos were good natured
and that the Cheney loving crowd was kidding him about his inability to throw the ball all the way to the plate rather than expressing their true opinion of his abysmal performsance as a servant of the people. Kind of like a beloved Bob Hope hitting a golf ball into the water hazard at his own tournament. This is typical Post/beltway thought. No one can have a negative opinion of any member of this regime because they don't print any in their paper and after all they are the only place for the public to learn anything. Very insular, very incestuous.

8.  Chimpy threw out the first pitch for Reds Opening Day
When Bush threw out the first pitch here in Cincinnati for our opener, he was sure to surround himself with wounded Iraq War veterans to insulate him from any possible booing.

It was the most inappropriately political use of the military I believe I've ever seen. But it was wickedly, effectively Rovian, wasn't it?

Cheney's at 19% approval and the Washington Post is still carrying his water? Money is surely being exchanged, at this point.

9. Must have been a clairvoyant crowd
to boo the pitch before he even threw it.
