A French History Teacher wants to use my "No Bravery" video in class
http://nobravery.cf.huffingtonpost.com

He says he wants to get across to french teenagers that not all americans support the neoCON foreign policy but says it is very difficult right now as anti-american hostility is so high and he is very concerned.

I am wondering what folks living outside of the US think about this. Is the anti-american sentiment worrisome to you too? Do you think this video can help?

I have had a few teachers abroad contact me about using my video in class and I am very honored to let them know that MANY americans are HORRIFIED by our current administration.

peace

1. That's wonderful!!
Good for you.

No I am not worried about anti-american sentiment. I do not want the rest of the world to think we all support the lunatic that is leading the country.

2. I live in the US, but please have him tell them this:
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 03:40 PM by kgfnally
The majority of the people of the US, if they followed current events with any interest at all, would have removed this administration by now. It is only because the various media companies are so tied into the interests of the businesses making the equipment that runs our war machine that we are ignorant of the true goings on.

Most Americans feel the internet is a ball of lies. They have been made to feel that way by the mainstream media; a vast swath of our population would cut off their arms rather than give up television as a news source.

We are being hypotized and following that boondoggled. We're hypnotized into thinking that boondoggling is good for us. There are a great many who have not fallen for it, but the media ignores them; therefore, they do not exist.

I don't know what can be done to counter intentional ignorance by those who control the airwaves. Just have him tell them, there's a serious element of intent among those in power right now regarding what's going on. They want this, but the majority of Americans, were they to know the full plan, or even part of it because they're paying attention, would not approve.

Have him give his students this website's address, to prove there are people here fighting against this mad mental plague threatening the US and the rest of the world. Have him tell them to be mad at the holders of power, for they are the ones doing the deeds.

OIrdinary Americans, by and large, are unaware. Tell him to hammer that point home.

4. I did mention how heavily propagandized we are but that also we are now
the MAJORITY but that i am worried about what impression foreigners had of americans through our heavily consolidated corporate media - not to mention the neoCONs war crimes.

i also gave him a link to DU ;->

thanks for your comments :hi:

And heck - introduce him to DU.

9. It's more than worrisome. It's a tragedy.
I can understand why, but I never believed the hostility would become this deep, even from former friends and admirers of America. (I live in Hong Kong, and travel in China and the Philippines). People in the rest of the world must somehow be made aware that a large part of America is as horrified as they are about what has happened to America.

Your video is so powerful.

10. I'm a Canadian college instructor, and I use Bush cartoons from US papers
.... all the time, in class. Tom Toles, Danziger, etc. -- I open almost every class with a recent cartoon on the oil industry, the environment, Katrina response, the Iraq war, etc.

Also, I emphasize the fact that American scientists and policymakers have been leaders on issues like global warming and building the United Nations -- and that the US pioneered things like national parks, endangered species legislation, and the EPA (we don't have an equivalent of the latter yet, and my students were disappointed because some of them wanted to work at such an agency).

15. Be careful with copyright issues
I've always loved the video, but your use of the song only qualifies as "fair use" because you're not redistributing it. If you start sending it around, you may find yourself the target of a copyright suit by music industry execs who may not want their song to be associated with such a "hot" topic.

Just my 2 pence.

16. I have let James Blunt and his Manger Know of my video...
i even posted on his blog twice.

in fact i even delivered a copy on CD to his stage manager at his recent concert in boston and I also let them know that if you google "No Bravery Video" it is number one as well... and i have received 0 complaints from him or his managers.

i think they are ok with it or i would have heard something by now.

18. But who owns his songs...Blunt or his label?
Important legal distinction. You should verify the copyright holder and notify them before giving out copies of the video. If the songwriter/label is part of ASCAP, you may also need a license there.

It could also be argued that you're shifting your use. Originally you were using it as part of an editorial, and as personal use goes, a suit would have been marginal and not worth pursuing for them. If you shift your role to distribution, however, you become a much higher profile target to RIAA lawyers.

I'm not saying not to do it, but check your legal bases beforehand. You don't want to discover your legal responsibilities AFTER you've been served.

24. No it doesn't.
FYI, I'm a college prof, which is where my curiosity stems from. Every year we have faculty get into trouble because they don't understand the law and re-use copyrighted material in the classroom without permission. Both the RIAA and ASCAP have rewards programs for people who turn in "pirates", and you'd be suprised how quickly many students will turn on you for a free CD voucher. They'll typically ding you a few grand for your first offense, so it's a painful lesson to learn.

I don't mean to sound argumentative, but I really like the video and I'd hate to see you get sued over it.

17. This is the most powerful FLASH video I've ever viewed, bpilgrim.
The first time you posted about it, I watched it over and over.

I just now decided to break my silence to my nephew. He's fifteen, plenty old enough to start thinking about these things. His father and most of the rest of our family are bushbots. His step brother joined the army and will do two tours of duty in Iraq. I'm terrified my nephew will end up getting killed in Bush's wars.

So, I sent him this message just now:

My Dear Nephew,

An Internet acquaintance of mine put together this FLASH video. I think it’s very powerful. Let me warn you that it’s very graphic, but you’re old enough to see this. In fact, as you get older, you are going to have to think about this stuff because you are a boy (nearly a man). The president will want you for his wars. You have to decide if your life and the lives you will be asked to take are worth Bush’s wars.

Only you can decide, but you need to look at all points of view. My guess is you have been mostly shielded from this particular point of view, which is actually shared by 99% of the world (and about 60% of our country):

21. We'll see. It took me a long time to break free.
The poor kid has to keep his mouth shut. His parents were virtually AT WAR with one another before, during and long after the divorce. I lost count of the court cases. His father is an Ayn Rand bushbot; his mother is a crazy-as-a-bedbug fundy. The woman is not sane. :( :( :( It's really very sad.
