A Scanner Darkly
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405296/

I've been waiting almost as long for this one as I waited for LOTR. The first time I read this Phillip K. Dick story back in the late seventies it instantly became a favorite of mine.

I saw the trailer yesterday for the first time. Didn't realize it was to be "animated" (more like computer-drawn SFX), but I think it fits. I don't know just what they've turned it into, but the original story was a screed against drug abuse. As was all of Dick's stories, it was well written and very engaging. As a postscript to the story, Mr. Dick dedicated the book to a list of his friends, most of which were dead from or seriously damaged by drug abuse.

And now they have Keanau Reeves and a whole cast of other top-notch performers doing the story. A first glance at the trailer suggests they tried to stay at least somewhat true to the characters, and I hope the larger points remain intact.

When it comes out, see it. BEFORE it comes out, track the book down and read it. Then give the book to a friend. Pass the story on. You won't regret it.

I promise.

2. I read the book back in the 70s when I was a kid
If only my parents had known . . .

But they didn't and I got my eyes opened.

I need to re-read the book, because it's hard to imagine turning this into a film, moreso, I'd say than LOTR.

I'd wax eloquent over Dick's genius, but I don't want to ruin anything for anyone.
