CONTEST: Graphic Design Wanted $100 Reward
Okay, folks -- its CONTEST TIME with a $100 Reward (payable via paypal or amazon or just a check in the mail).

I am looking for a graphic design for a sign that I will be printing at Kinkos, and will be making available to anyone else who wants to do the same. I am not sure where the sign is going yet, but I will be finding someplace to put it where it will gather attention.

For now, pretend the dimensions are 2 x 3 (feet), with the ability to expand it appropriately (dimension wise).

I will be asking DU to vote on which ones they like best, but I reserve the right to pick the one I like best for the Reward.

If I don't like any of the submissions, I'll donate the Reward to the Democratic candidate of my choice instead.

WHAT SHOULD BE ON IT:

A Gas Pump w/Price Tag: $1.09 a gallon (with an asterisk next to it)

A Short, Clever Comment explaining that was back in 2000 before Bush and his Corrupt Cabal of Republicans took over Washington.

A Tag Line at the Bottom: Lying, Dying, Spying - IMPEACH ALREADY!

PURPOSE: To associate Washington Republicans and ALL REPUBLICANS RUNNING FOR OFFICE with High Gas Prices, which directly impact the voter's pocketbook.

DEADLINE: Sunday Evening, 8:00 p.m. EST.

Questions will be answered sporadically, as I am going to be running around (and am already running late this morning).

DISCLAIMER: Submitting a design to this thread or privately e-mailing it to me constitutes permission to use it. I haven't asked the mods for permission to do this, so if I'm violating any rules, my apologies (but I don't think I am) with a "please lock" addendum. Please keep kicked, and hopefully we'll see some awesome inspiring DU artwork. PLEASE DO NOT VIOLATE ANY ONE ELSE'S COPYRIGHT WHILE CREATING YOUR SUBMISSION.

Anything else? Oh, yes: THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

Enjoy! :)

1. Sounds great but could you extend the dead line until Sunday?
A few of us already have tasks and errands that must be done today but would hate to miss out on the opportunity to throw in a submission.

Just asking....

5. No problem -- it provide an opportunity to put the deadline in a

P.S. And thanks in advance to everyone who is kicking and recommending this thread! Yeah, DU! :)

6. Kicking w/More Info: Please post your submission to this thread
or e-mail it to me using the DU Link. I have never been able to make "images" work in a thread myself, but hopefully someone will be able to do it. After the images are posted, people should comment underneath them. If it gets too unwieldy, I'll start a new thread.

Thank you in advance to everyone who participates, either by using their graphic skill, kicking the thread, or just voicing their opinions about the submissions.

Best, Ida

12. No offense, but I find these sorts of "contests" to be...
... pro-company and anti-employee.

In a nutshell: In virtue of "contests" of this sort, you the company benefit from the work of 100s of employees, but only have to pay one. And that one gets paid at substantially less than the market rate.

Just my $.02.

13. Um, in this case, I am acting as an individual (not a company).
So, please to explain how I am benefiting from the work of hundreds of "employees"?

I am going to be going to Kinko's to print out posters of the "winning" design (at $50 a pop, if I don't decide to spend more money), and then I will be putting them someplace AS AN INDIVIDUAL where other (hopefully voters) can see the message I am trying to communicate.

I do not understand you complaint, but would like to, if you would care to explain further....? (Did you perchance think I was someone I'm not?)

14. Becuase you get the labor....
... of 100s (or however many) graphic designers FOR FREE. (If you're still not getting it: the employees here are the "contest" entrants.)

Except for the one you gotta pay $100 to. Which adds up to about 2-3 hours of labor - almost certainly less than the time the artist put into it.

And there's no contradiction in a company being only one person.

IMO, if you want a graphic designer, go and pay market rate for one. If you want a marketing team (to come up with snappy slogans of the sort you're looking for) - go and pay market rate for one. These "contests" seem to me to be a cute way to avoid paying fair market price for labor.

Just my opinion tho.

15. Well, if this wasn't a VOLUNTEER activity, I might agree with you.
But, since that is what it is, I'm not too worried about "taking advantage" of fellow innocent Dems.

But thank you for sharing your opinion; it was interesting to hear it, even if I disagree with it.

And, honestly, if the idea isn't interesting enough for other people, then they won't be contributing to the thread, will they? :)

24. There is nothing wrong..
... with what you are doing. Mostly "amateurs" who do this sort of stuff all the time for free will be participating anyway. Which is not to say you won't get some great entries.

I'd do one myself, but I just read this and I'd need more time :)

Best of luck to you in getting an entry that conveys your message well. There are lots of talented people here, I'm sure they will come through!

19. Quite right. Contests for creative results are always a way to get alot
for a little. I don't think Ida Briggs has a bad intent, but it's right that she be made aware that graphic designers make their living from their creativity. To be asked to work on spec is an insult.

20. Or she might be operating from the premise
that on this particular board there are people who would regard it as part of their political activism. There are threads started all the time urging people to write letters to the editor, make calls to politicians, participate in rallies. Activities that require donations of time and effort. I'm a graphics dweeb and yeah I do like to get paid. But I'm not financially motivated in my anti-Chimp efforts, which emanate from a higher plane, the lofty and noble desire to slap him up side his withered little head.

27. But this isn't a case of being asked to do something pro bono.
We've all done freebies. And that's fine. But she isn't asking you to contribute your talent for something she will definitely use. She's asking you to do the work and maybe she'll use it if she likes it. So x number of people (the ones not chosen) will have done the work for nothing, not even the pleasure of pro bono.

As for regarding it as political activism: maybe if Ida said she would be using all of the contributions. But the way she has it set up, only one person will not have wasted their effort. All the others' "political activism" will have been for naught.

I don't mean to beat up on Ida. I just think she didn't think the thing through.

30. hadn't thought of it that way
I know you're not meaning to beat up on Ida and the concerns you express are legitimate. I can understand why people would be reluctant to invest significant time/energy. I think I interpreted it as helping someone out with a kind of informal group project to generate some quick and dirty poster ideas and wasn't really taking the contest aspect of it seriously.

31. Thank you! That's where I was going -- the "contest" aspect
with a hundred dollar reward was intended to be an additional motivational reward type thing. Unfortunately, it appears to have pissed off the pros. What can you do?

If you decide to use it I'd rather it be a donation since I threw it together in 5 minutes.

Your tag line has nothing to do with your gas price message. I'd suggest you try to tie the two together.
