City approves ban on feeding homeless downtown

WILMINGTON -- Wilmington City leaders call it a short-term solution to a long-term problem. They approved a proposal Tuesday that bans feeding homeless people in the downtown area.

City leaders say it's not about not helping the homeless. With this resolution passing they're hoping to work more closely with agencies that help feed the homeless. Part of this resolution is to bring those agencies and city departments closer together. In developing this idea staff members talked to six community groups that currently do help the homeless.

Leaders are developing what they call a 10-year plan to end homelessness. Council members said they aren't trying to punish homeless people, but instead, making sure they are getting the best help they can get. snip

The area that's affected is from Water to Third Street and Ann to Grace Street. No feeding can be done on streets or sidewalks.

1. More Reason For Willmington Residents to Bring Food
. . . to the streets.

What an ugly, ugly law. Makes homeless people sound like zoo animals. "Please don't feed the homeless." Ugh.

5. There was an organization in New Orleans
which (before Katrina) would provide chits for people to give homeless folks on the street good for meals, showers, overnight stays at a hostel. The idea was for tourists not to give the homeless money for fear they would buy alcohol, which was the case most of the time. This was not a government entity. I thought at the time it was a good idea. I contributed regularly before the hurricane but haven't heard from them since.

8. So what if they were going to use the money on alcohol?
I mean, isn't that what the person who gave the money was going to spend it on?

11. Most likely
That certainly would apply to me. The mission's goal was to give the homeless a warm meal, a shower and a place to sleep. I think there goal was a good one.

16. Its called The New Orleans Mission
I'm not sure of their current status due to the hurricane but they put a lot of effort in aiding the homeless in New Orleans.

7. All Posters: Great answers to a really STUPID ruling
As they say, "Out of Sight-Out of Mind"

Can't compete for that All-American-Beautiful-City Award with those pesky hungry folks hanging around.

DUhandle (poster #4)...Perfect slogan for protesters of this latest corporate disgrace:

"Feed Pigeons Not people"

This is sickening..

Thanks
