Joe Bastardi; Major hurricane could hit Northeast this year
Edited on Mon Mar-20-06 04:18 PM by killerbush
Accuweather hurricane forecaster Joe Bastardi was on Foxnews with Shepard Smith this afternoon, and said the potential for a major hurricane to strike the Northeast, is higher than it has ever been. Bastardi cites warmer than normal sea surface temps all along the eastern seaboard as a worrying factor.
Now the Northeast has had its share of hurricanes, but you have to go all the way back to 1938 to find a MAJOR hurricane hitting New England. Also, NY City is extremely vulnerable to a large storm simply because a hurricane coming from the south, or worse yet, the southeast, takes and piles the water in the five boroughs. We could have 10-20 feet of water inside the subway systems in New York, and major flooding 30-40 miles inland. all along the Ct shoreline, the Providence RI area, and Boston could also be affected by storm surge.
Bastardi also said the upper Texas coast also could be a hot spot for major hurricanes. He cited Hurricane Rita as an example of hurricanes shifting more to the west. Corpus Christi, Houston, and the Coastal Bend area in Texas would be under the gun.

Now, will these storms happen this year? Bastardi doesn't know, but he predicts sooner rather than later, these areas will see a major hurricane hit. Hurricanes that could rival, Andrew, Hugo, Opal, Katrina, Rita and Wilma. He suggest getting ready now, before June 1st hits, that way you won't be scrambling for supplies at the last minute. A lot of people will remember 2005, while 2006 likely will not be as busy as last year, it takes only one well placed hurricane to make it a memeorable season.:scared: :scared: :scared:

2. Agnes was a real PITA when she hit D.C., and Isabel left me
without power for 2 weeks in the sweltering heat. Not looking forward to this season one bit. BUT....I've stocked up on crank radios and little TVs that run on batteries and stuff. Do I have to buy an expensive generator, too?

10. If you live anywhere near the coast, you should
because a small generator and a few Jerry cans of gas to run it can make the difference between having things to eat out of your fridge and freezer and having to scrounge MREs from the Red Cross and living on PB&J the rest of the time.

3. Yeah, all you folks under the gun for hurricanes better start
Preparing now, both for evacuation and for rebuilding. Check you insurance policies and such. Because we all know that Bushco and FEMA won't do a damn thing until it's too late and they're dollars short.

5. Accuweather is Santorum's play pretty - I'll stick w/ The Weather Channel
You do know that Accuweather has made big lobbying donations to Santorum, in exchange for which he sponsors legislation which would make it illegal for any government agency, such as NOAA to provide free weather forecasts if a private entity (Accuweather) is selling the same. This would privatize/gut NOAA and the Weather Channel and the car weather stations.

The guy on Fox didn't come up with anything new. It's a fact that ocean temps are up, expecially in the Gulf, and this greatly exacerbates the strength of tropical storms/hurricanes. Any meteorologist would tell you that.

6. Why do you people live in that part of the country?
That is a question asked of us who live in South Louisiana and South Mississippi after Katrina. I hope Mother Nature calms down for awhile and let all of us have a happy summer.

And Welcome Aboard!

7. Big Bend under the gun? It's not coastal, and it's sparsely populated.

Did Bastardi maybe say the Coastal Bend?

11. Nah, you'll get rained on a lot
but you won't get the winds and storm surge people south of the mid Atlantic states are likely to get. Most hurricanes that hit the northeast will start to lose their punch as soon as they lose the Gulf Stream and the water underneath them gets cold. Strong Category 2 is about all New England can expect. The Category 5 monsters are far, far south.

That big one in 38 was aimed at exactly the wrong spot, right up Narragansett Bay. That's why it did so much damage. It was that surge, funneled up a narrowing bay, aimed right at Providence.

14. according to discovery channel
a cat 2 at manhattan would make the destruction caused by katrina look like a warm spring day

reason, density of buildings and population

a cat 2 wind is not a joke in any area that has not seen a cat 2 for decades, just ask jackson mississippi how much fun they had w.out electric, water, sewer, or gas for cars because trees that had never seen such winds all came down at once on the power lines

how much more fun it will be when it happens to the densely populated northeast coast and there will be fire also

don't kid yourself abt the cat 2s

they can be bad news aimed at the wrong spot

the 30s were a similar peak in the atlantic hurricane cycle, the 38 storm didn't just hit at a bad place because of bad luck, it hit because there were lots of storm at that time of cycle and sooner or later one of them is going to hit where you don't want it

13. Joe Bastardis job is to sell accuweather subscriptions
HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE. Yes, he was a decent long range forecaster, and every now and then gets it right, but if I predicted a huge storm every week chances are one will actually happen.

Joe bashes the NWS and says accuweather cant get a fair play in the weather biz going against the govt. I'll leave alone the fact he only appears on fox news. There are better places to get weather info. For eastern US readers, I'd suggest http://www.easternuswx.com Good info, and FREE.
