2. Lou is an idiot... as are apparently 91% of the responders.

And before you flame... ask this: How exactly are "Democratic Values" related to "Profits"... they are not. Its an emotional poll to find out how many idiots, like Lou, actually buy into this kind of crap. Lou is a protectionist.. the last of dying breed of conservative repug. Someday he will realize that the US economy is directly tied to the global economy. Advances in capitalism in communists countries, like China, will only benefit the US economy going forward.

on edit: clarified my statement for the lemmings...just maybe they will think about it.

6. Among other things - lobbyists
Lobbyists line the pockets of those who cast votes on things like free trade agreements, tariffs, etc. When more money is spent to insure increased profitability of American companies than protecting our right to vote & have those votes counted; an actual war on terrorism (what ever happened to that Anthrax investigation?); or congressional oversight on abrogation of privacy rights of the average American I'd say "Democratic values" are compromised.

9. You are confusing the "government" with the "private sector"
Edited on Fri Jan-06-06 06:45 PM by MazeRat7
Lou's concern is one of a "protectionists" mentality. That being "If companies expand their base overseas...its bad for the US". Companies exist to make money. Unfortunately, corporations are the "demon" we (the US) have let out the box and now can not control. They are the wealthiest entities on the planet (some eg. Microsoft) have more net worth than many small countries.

That aside.. our democracy is so tied to capitalism (making profits) that once that demon was out of the box...we could not put it back. As bad as that is.. this is not directly related to "Democratic Values" which are about all humans being equal and the right to pursue liberty and happiness.

True, money should be spent on fixing the voting problems, universal health care, a decent minimum wage, etc. While these things are influenced by lobbyists for corporations, that is a different discussion than whether a corporation should/should not expand into a communists (or other) country.

Companies are going to expand. That is their reason for existence. IF there is a link between "democratic values" and "profit" it will be that corporate expansion around the globe will help increase capitalism which needs democracy to exist.

13. I don't think so
I understand the difference between government and the private sector. I also understand that private sector interests buy a lot of influence in the government. I also understand that private interest undermines unions, looks out for its own self-interest, uses local/state governments for tax abatements (which decreases those tax bases), fights wage increases, etc.

Let's just agree to disagree.

7. Not just Microsoft
The whole damned nation. I mean, we soon will be owned by China who is financing an enormous amount of the national debt.

Oh, and if there is something to "spreading Democracy" across the world, China would be one of the first places to start, but the last time it was tried, I believe the protestors were run over by tanks in Tienaman Square. But, of course, if we really did try to help the Chinese become democratic, we would lose our cheap labor force.

So Microsoft is just one of the biggies who compromise "American Democratic values."

8. What American values? The more I live under Bush the better
any other country looks. Perpetual war just like Oceania in 1984 is not my idea of a value. Cutting college help, doing away with Head Start, abrogating international treaties, refusing to accept global warming, being a corporate flunky, destroying our forests, air, water, eviscerating the protection of the endangered species, torturing, ruining our entire economy, preemptively attacking another sovereign nation(s) with a policy based on lies and greed, disgracing our country with the villification of our important allies, allowing many American citizens to die in the Katrina disaster ( obviously a deliberate policy aimed at a city and state with Democrats in charge), the suborning of our Constitution, attempting to be above any law, defeating the health of all of us by denying the use of stem cells to expedite scientific research dedicated to curing diseases, attempting to disallow the rights of American citizens because the their racial, sexual, and other inclinations, being consistently either evil or incompetent and, oh, so many other unacceptable actions, which are secretive, illegal, greedy, and destructive. America under Bush/Cheney is a disaster of unchecked power, demonization of the dems, religious blasphemy and so much more.
