Billionaire Carl Icahn has nixed plans to stack Time Warner’s board with proponents of breaking up the media company, seeking instead to merely increase his representation after the shareholder activist’s radical proposal lacked sufficient support.

Mr. Icahn had originally planned to serve a full slate of 14 directors in an upcoming election, but the Wall Street Journal reported that the financier is now putting forward a slate of just five directors. The change came after several major investors told him they would not support the breakup plan he and investment firm Lazard had suggested last week, the paper said (see Time Warner Breakup Urged).

The billionaire may have gained more backing on Thursday after news that United Arab Emirates-based media investment company Istithmar PJSC controls 2.4 percent of Time Warner in participation notes. The UAE company has hired one of Mr. Icahn’s entities as its advisor.

Either way Time Warner cannot afford to piss off the UAE what with all those huge advertising revenues that could be coming their way..
