1. Yep. The research program was very important to the
Reeves. More than their own lives.

Bush has cut the public funding to zero for their cause.

How very sad that our country has money for bombs and destruction of sovereign countries and the rebuilding of their infrastructure, but no monies for our own needy.

I am very confused here on what is true. My geneticist say that this administration is the first to fund it but limits it to a few lines. Was it funded before? Help!!

I can hardly pay for a family practioner.

What does your geneticist charge you? for what services?

30. We have one
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 12:58 AM by Freedom_Aflaim
Due to a variety of medical issues that my kids have.

I don't know what he charges, its all covered by insurance, although there are some services that were not covered by insurance, however he did them gratis because of the research value to him and the hospital

Sounds good when I write it I suppose, but really you don't want to need a geneticist, nor qualify for free service because of your unique research value :(

46. You don't need a geneticist
We do need funding to move forward in our knowledge of disease and genetic links.

Having genetic information about your risk factors isn't helpful if there's nothing you can do with that information. It would be a huge waste of money and resources to give genetic testing to everyone for a variety of diseases, particularly when their risk of having a genetic defect is low and when there are limited remedies for what can be done.

Genetic research today is focusing more on how to treat disease. It will move on to the prevention phase later when more is known.

Like somemone else said, you don't want to need one. I have multiple sclerosis, several others in my family do also, I had a baby in my 40's and I go to a geneticist.
It is covered by my insurance with a 9$ co-pay.

22. hmmm
i missed that part in her post. i'm curious about it also.

as for Bush and stem cell issue. they were the first which dealt with it in such a way and he limited how much we could do.

Gore, Clinton or almost any other Dem would have fully supported it. but the Bush administration has held us back and America no longer leads in an area we should be leading in.

Does he have a plan for doing anything about it? I'm sorry, but the continual posts linking Kerry to the Reeve's tragic stories seems to exploit their tragedy.

31. I missed that post, but would like to tell the poster...
that I care. I have a child with Type 1 Diabetes, who started getting insulin injections at the age of four, just to stay alive. I was touched by and grateful for the work and strength of Christopher and Dana Reeve in their fight for stem cell research.

I'm not much impressed by celebrities, but they proved to be a lot more than that. This is a case where I, rather cruelly perhaps, can't understand why SOME people can live, prosper and create misery and death for others, while good people of courage and generosity have lives cut short.

40. Kerry wants to help poor blacks in Africa and other parts of the world
including here by funding programs to provide help for the people. Kerry and most of us in America including most of us who are neither rich or white know poor people in Africa or other parts of the world personally. but many of us still support providing aid for them.

unlike that piece of shit monkey in the white house and his fucked up supporters.

of course there are always jackasses who neither care about poor people anywhere and always bring up some stupid crap like "did K?erry call the poor guy in Africa" rather than support the people and issues which would actually do something for the people.

18. The Reeves and Kerry had a common goal
to help those in need, here, in our country. We all know W cares only about caring for those in need if they are residents of foreign governments who have oil.

W has no problem in saying we'll give them health care. He just has a problem in thinking we, here, deserve health care. How can his buddies profit? We have no oil. No health care for us. He has his priorities.

Its starting to look like he's taking political advantage of their tragedy, which I'm sure he doesn't intend.

That said, if Kerry wants to honor them, he should get busy and do a lot more than he's doing now to advance a research agenda and ensure all Americans have access to quality health care, not just a few.

20. The denizens of Free Republic tried to turn this into one of their
absurd mini scandals by trying to prove that Kerry lied about this incident and that Reeve never spoke to him the weekend before he died.

For a couple of days they were nearly hysterical with threads analyzing where Kerry was, what phone he had with him, what time it was where Reeve was, was Reeve in or out of a coma, etc.

When it became clear that the facts showed that Kerry was telling the truth, they dropped the subject like a hot potato and nimbly skipped on to the next lie.

The picture in my other post in this thread shows Kerry has known Reeves for a good while since their styles of hair and clothes and also Reeves isn't in his wheelchair. So they've known each other for a good number of years. Did anybody see "Larry King" tonight? He was talking about Mrs. Reeves and Kerry was supposed to have called in.
