Researching WHO wiretapped MLK. Was it RFK, Hoover or Clinton?
Now I know where my freeper co-worker got the RFK meme. It's all over the reich-wing internets.

Hard to filter through the chaff because there is a "brazillian" RFK did-it posts.

I guess I shoulda figured.

1. It Was Hoover
Hoover, who was head of the FBI at the time, wielded considerable power. He basically forced RFK to sign the paperwork that gave the MLK wiretaps the green light. (Hoover probably threatened to go public with whatever goods he had on Bobby or JFK.)

Clinton had nothing to do with it. I think he was in high school at that point. That's one the RWingnuts can't blame on Big Dog! :D

2. "But he would have if he had the chance"
You know that's what they would say.

There was a great thread here not too long ago by H2OMan about this. It was Hoover ... and all Hoover.

3. Hoover bugged everyone in public life at one

4. It was Clinton
Haven't you been listening to the right-wing hacks of the airwaves. Everything that goes wrong in this country, has gone wrong, will go wrong, or is evil is Clinton's fault.

7. Civil War?

Hell No. Everyone knows that in the 70's (1770's) he was in England and had a student deferment from the Red Coat Army draft!:sarcasm:

Didn't you see him in the photos outside the Mosque? He uses the name Abu-bill Clinton.

6. This is the last place that you
should be doing research on this topic. The bias factor is pretty acute, like the first response you got, stating that Hoover forced RFK to sign the authorization. Even Wikipedia is a better source.

8. So what if RFK was involved
Regardless if it was a democrat or a puke, it was still illegal and unconstitutional. I get tired of "but he did it" justifications. I don't recall if the MLK taps came out before or after 68, but we should stand firm against it no matter who approved it or knew of it, even if it was one of our "saints."

And actually, I think RFK was involved in the surveillance of MLK. For those alive during the 60's, RFK did a lot of growing up politcally. During his campaign, he showed deep remorse for many of the things he did while AG. When he was AG, his #1 job was to protect JFK at all costs and to push JFK's anti-communist, cold-war foreign policy. Thus the MLK surveillance, the US Army postal inspection program (in the 60's; the Army actually read our mail before we did); and Army counterintelligence, FBI, and CIA infiltration of leftist organizations (in some groups infiltrated, all the members were either Army, FBI, CIA, or local police informants or undercover agents) were his undertakings.

11. That's pretty much my opinion on the matter.
But the RFK did it meme didn't pass the smell test considering Hoover's love for black-mail and the bugs. Hence, my request for help.
