Do we have only 4 brave souls in the Senate?
Republicans in the Senate blocked every attempt to add amendments to protect civil rights, Dems told to stuff their amendments and 41 Democratic Senators reward them by voting for the bill anyway. Disgusting.

Kudos to those who stood and fought regardless of the odds.

Senators voting against S. 2271 (USA PATRIOT Act Additional Reauthorizing Amendments Act of 2006):

Byrd (D-WV)
Feingold (D-WI)
Harkin (D-IA)
Jeffords (I-VT)

Senator Inouye (D-HI) did not cast a vote. All other U.S. Senators voted to reauthorize.

1. Well at one time it was only one....
Feingold was the only one and I know this is not much of an effort but it is a step. The more these people start to come off this "tough on terra" mode, the more you will see more vote this way...

2. Alas, neither of my Dem senators had the guts.
I'm not at all surprised that Cantwell voted for it, but quite disappointed in Murray.

If that's what you think, that DEMOCRATIC Senator Cantwell isn't better than the REPUBLICAN Slade Gorton....well then, have another beer or something ;)

Of course I instantly knew why you did your comments, I knew instantly it was because Senator Cantwell is OH MY GOD!!!! She's in that thar DLC.

On Edit: Word.

15. Aw, shucks. You caught me.
Cantwell is a member of the DLC and votes accordingly. I give you her vote for the war as evidence.

Is she better than Slade? No doubt. Is that a good reason to vote for her? I think not.

17. Jaysus, Senator Cantwell has HUNDREDS of more votes than IWR
So you'd be willing to just throw Senator Cantwell away when she's up for re-election because of her Iraq War vote?

Is she better than Slade? No doubt. Is that a good reason to vote for her? I think not.

'Um, can you elaborate on your bizarre comment please? So when she's up for re-election who will you vote for, if it's Senator Cantwell v Whoever Dunderhead?

22. You seem pretty dismissive of what's happening in Iraq.
That one little vote authorized the deaths of 10s of thousands of people to advance her own political ambitions.

I'll be voting for whatever candidate is an anti-war progressive. That automatically eliminates Cantwell and whoever the Republicans run.

You find democracy "bizarre"?

5. Yeah Senator Byrd was the Devil Incarnate not so long ago wasn't he?
You know when he voted for the idiot Alito, and got beaten up on countless threads? Now, gosh he's ONE of only FOUR brave souls that my party has.

I'm proud to say, that although I disagreed with Senator Byrd's Alito vote, I never beat up on him.

This is getting ridiculous, one day it's HEY ISN'T SO AND SO DEMOCRAT GREAT THEY VOTED FOR SOMETHING I LIKE....then a few days later the SAME Democrat gets HEY ISN'T SO AND SO DEMOCRAT A DINO THEY VOTED FOR SOMETHING THAT I DON'T LIKE.

The Senator's in our party cannot vote the way everybody likes all of the time, and nor should they. We have 43 brave Senator's....I refuse to include Ben Nelson of Nebraska, as he's not brave in the slightest.

This post richly deserves a thread of its own. I was thinking the very same thing when I saw, with some amusement, this thread. Will you post this or a variation therof on its own?

21. Personally voting against the patriot act doesn't mean a damn thing
Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 07:12 PM by FreedomAngel82
The republicans will over rule it anyways and Alito is still in there for other rulings such as my reproductive rights FOR LIFE. Sorry but I will never forgive anybody who voted for him. The "patriot act" can be changed and deleted but Alito CAN NEVER BE!!!!!

18. Some changes have already been made
So it isn't like every attempt to change the Patriot Act has been blocked.

It's too bad people didn't get behind the alternative bill that was passed last year, the one supported by the ACLU. But noooo, it was repeal the Patriot Act or nothing.

So, this is what purism got ya. A big old pile of nothing.

20. Easy there, you sound like, dare I say it, a pragmatist.
You know, someone who believes ANYTHING is better than continued Repug control of the House, Senate, and Presidency. There are those who find such an approach unacceptable.
