8. i heard this was an OS issue... any browser that displays images by defaul
can potentially exploit this vulnerability, no?

but i agree 100% about mozilla, it blows IE out the ethernet ;->

15. It is an OS issue ,but....
Mozilla prompts the user if it encounters a Windows Metafile.

However, that's not enough to save you since the malware can be disguised as pretty much any type of file.

Oh and btw, a linux (or any) firewall won't prevent you from getting infected ,but it can prevent the malware from calling out on the Internet and downloading a payload.

Anyhow, I'm not worried about cruising the Internet.

20. yeah, OS + THE most common format on the www an IMAGE file
Edited on Wed Jan-04-06 09:48 PM by bpilgrim
(forgot to stress that in my OP)

anyways...

does it need to call out-bound to do it's thing or is that optional?
but even if it did, couldn't it just go through one of the always OPEN PORTS in your FW, no?

or if it got a hold of your account info (jackpot) it could configure the fire wall to open it's doors/posts anyway it wanted...

:scared:

24. Looks like OS X had a vulnerability related to .gifs patched in
September, among other things. http://www.frsirt.com/english/advisories/2005/1823

Macs aren't inherently completely invulnerable to exploit and Apple issues security patches to update against vulnerabilities that could be exploited. But it's not as much of a fat juicy target as MS for a number of reasons, one of which is MS' vastly greater user base.

22. Yes, It's an OS issue, not a browser issue. Check out the GRC link
for details on the test for your PC's vulnerability, and to get the patch now.

9. Are these 'worm' alerts color coded?
Edited on Wed Jan-04-06 08:56 PM by Catrina

Speaking of which, we haven't had any alerts since Bush needed them before the election, have we?

Too bad Homeland Security didn't issue one when they KNEW US citizens really were in danger as Hurricane Katrina was approaching and they had DAYS to do something about it. So much for the 'National Security ~ 'Daddy-Bush-will-take-care-of-you, Kerry-will-let-you-die' administration!

13. There's already a fix out
It was referenced on another thread, and I didn't bookmark it. I DID download and apply the patch, however. I seem to recall it being on a page at grc.com- Mr. Gibson always keeps up on this stuff. He's great.

29. I don't think we own any Microsoft software.....
Mac Users (with a side of BSD) here.

The last piece of MS software I owned was Office 98, and when iWork came out, I uninstalled Office (since I had a spreadsheet program from Mariner, Keynote, Pages and Oracle 9 for databasing.)

32. Not scared at all.
I'm fairly well protected due to the fact i don't visit but a handfull(maybe 5-6) of sites i know are safe. I never click on links from people i don't trust. I never open any e-mail(which i get very, very little)unless it's someone i know, and even then images won't appear or open unless i say to(which i never do).
