16. He knows.
"I believe" is a lawyer's way of avoiding a perjury rap.

So, even though this isn't under oath, and he's lying his head off, it was only his opinion if somebody catches it. In the meantime, a million people who don't read DU have been reassured.

It's just one of those things that separates the "reality-based community" from the Bushbots.

4. according to the Fox News Site, Rove is wrong
snip... "This is, after all, a country that still sees the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan and still fails to recognize Israel as a sovereign state," Foley (Mark Foley, R-Fla)said.

"For a country that recognized the Taliban, as one of only three, the last thing you want is a country like this to have control of ... our ports," added Shays.

DPW would not be responsible for cargo screening, which is performed by the Department of Homeland Security, but the port operator is responsible for securing cargo coming in and out of the port, the port facility itself and the hiring of security personnel.

"We can't be too casual about this, especially since we've learned what we have on 9/11. When we talk about Dubai, United Emirates, we have to remember what's taken place there," said Lautenberg, who served as commissioner of the Ports Authority for New York and New Jersey.

Lautenberg added that the UAE has been regarded as the place for materials used to make a nuclear weapon to be transferred among rogue hands.

8. Rove is lying.
UAE does not have diplomatic relations with Israel. Rove may have allowed himself some wiggle room by indicating that he believes that the UAE 'recognizes' Israel, as that is an imprecise term.

"Israeli media reported last June that the Jewish state had been holding extensive talks with UAE officials about opening a liaison office in Abu Dhabi, where an Emirati source promptly knocked down the story as Israeli propaganda.

Only the federal government decides the foreign policy of the Emirates, said Ani.

And where Abu Dhabi is concerned, it is the establishment of a just and global peace which will promote such normalization, and not the contrary, he added."

18. Don't matter: they don't.
Neither do the rest of our major good buddies such as the Saud family and the Al-Sabah (Kuwait) family in the ME except Egypt and Jordan.

"Most important are Israel's ties with Arab states. In addition to full diplomatic relations with Egypt, Jordan and Mauritania, Israel now has ties of one kind or another with Morocco, Tunisia, Oman, Qatar, and Bahrain."

"This totally unjustified initiative is contrary to international law and Emirati federal law, the Emirates National Committee Against Normalization with the Israeli Enemy, created in November 2000 by Emirati personalities, said in a statement."

Rove is merely continuing the Bush rule: Everything they say is a lie.

Edit to fix link.

12. They won't normalise relations with Israel until Palestine is independent
The United Arab Emirates has denied Israeli press reports that Israel had opened a diplomatic mission in Dubai.

A Foreign Ministry source "categorically denied reports carried by some Israeli newspapers in recent days about the opening of an Israeli representative office in Dubai", the official WAM news agency reported on Sunday.

The UAE "is fully committed to the Arab peace initiative announced at the Beirut and Algiers summits (in 2002 and March this year) which links any normalisation of ties with Israel with recognition of the Palestinian people's legitimate rights, including their right to the establishment of an independent state with holy Jerusalem as its capital", the source said.

The Israeli daily Haaretz said on Sunday that Israel had recently opened "a secret diplomatic mission" whose diplomats were being presented as businessmen in Dubai, one of seven emirates making up the UAE federation.

excellent partnership of Israel at one point, the U.S. at the second point and the House of Saud at athe third. Dangling off to the side is the UAE.

If they won't have diplomatic relations with Israel until Palestine is independent, they have my support.

But, they also have support for the Taliban AND the U.S. also has support for the Taliban except in the case of poppies.

Isn't this one messy mess?

15. That's not what it says on UAE's official website.
posted on 26/06/2004

Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Defence Minister, General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has categorically refuted the allegation that the UAE had approved Israel's request to open its representation office in Abu Dhabi. He said that media report was baseless, as "the UAE has no intention nor a plan to normalise ties with the Jewish entity until the Palestinian issue is totally resolved in a just and comprehensive way, which will return to Arabs all their rights." Sheikh Mohammed made the statement in an open discussion with the press, which he held in Beirut last Thursday on the fringe of the 10th Arab Investment and Capital Markets Conference.

The open discussions were held in the presence of more than one thousand audience, including economic, banking and media personalities. He said the UAE was moving smoothly towards "the shores of security and has no fears for the future because we plan and study well before implementation and all what you see today in Dubai do not exceed 10 per cent of the planned projects. We are just at the beginning. We have taken the first step, which will take us to the end of the road, God willing," he said. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
