Democratic Politicians should be pushed into broadcasting the legislation enacted in SD. Most people support abortion rights. They need to be reminded of how precarious those rights are. I've written to my Senators and rep about this, hope you'll do the same. This could help us in the 2006 election.
SD is a good and simple talking point. Far more dangerous is the federal law banning so called partial birth abortions. This is the most important abortion case in 14 years, since Casey. Casey essentially redefined Roe by substituting an undue burden standard for the "fundamental" right standard. In other words, it opened the door for legislation restricting abortion before fetal viability. PA's law allowed the state to enact informed consent laws, waiting periods, parental notification, and allowed requiring abortion providers to keep records of the events. The federal PB ban which has no health exception, if allowed to become enforceable law, will lead to other restrictions in which the health of the mother can be disallowed as a valid reason to perform an abortion. It's a much more complex argument to make. Most people just have a visceral reaction to what they think PBA is.
So, let's use SD's rash legislation to mobilize women and their pro-choice allies. Really, this shouldn't be too difficult an argument to make.
